Syfy US Picks Up ‘Krypton’ & Grant Morrison’s ‘Happy!’ To Series. Developing George R.R. Martin’s Nightflyers

This is news that makes me Happy! Syfy US have not only officially picked up the Superman prequel Krypton to series, but also the wonderfully bizarre Happy!, based on the comic book from Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson. They are also developing a show based on George R.R. Martin’s novella Nightflyers.

Krypton tells the story of Seg-El, grandfather to Kal-El, aka Superman. Set two generations before Krypton get’s all explodey, in a time when the House Of El has been ostracised and shamed, Seg fights to restore the family’s name and honour, and stop his world from descending in to chaos.

David S. Goyer (Constantine, Man Of Steel, Da Vinci’s Demons, BvS: Dawn of Justice) wrote the pilot with Damian Kindler (Sanctuary, Sleepy Hollow, Stargate SG-1), who also serves as showrunner, based on a story by Ian B. Goldberg (Once Upon a Time, Terminator: TSCC).

Happy! stars Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU, True Blood) as Nick Sax, a corrupt, intoxicated ex-cop turned hit-man, who is adrift in a stinking twilight world of casual murder, soulless sex, eczema, and betrayal. With a hit gone wrong, a bullet in his side, the cops and the mob on his tail, and a monstrous child killer in a Santa suit on the loose, Nick and his world are changed forever… by a tiny, relentlessly positive, imaginary, blue horse called Happy!

The pilot was co-written by Grant Morrison and Brian Taylor (Crank, Gamer, Jonah Hex), with Taylor also directing. Patrick Macmanus (Marco Polo) will serve as showrunner.

Nightflyers is set in the future, on the eve of Earth’s destruction. A crew of explorers take a journey aboard ‘The Nightflyer’ –  the most advanced ship in the galaxy – to intercept a mysterious alien spacecraft that might hold the key to their survival. As the crew nears their destination, they discover that the ship’s artificial intelligence, alongside a never-seen captain, may be steering them into deadly and unspeakable horrors out in the dark reaches of space…

Before you go “finish the damn book George!”, Mr. R.R. Martin has no direct involvement with the show, so it shouldn’t distract him from the long awaited next installment of the ‘Song of Ice and Fire’ series. The show is being written by Jeff Buhler (Jacob’s Ladder),

Krypton and Happy! are set to undergo some cast changes before being put into production. Nightflyers is only in development at the moment, so we’ll let you know when we hear more!
