‘Misfits’ Getting A US Remake

Freeform have given a pilot order to a remake of UK show ‘Misfits‘ the US network announced today.

Fake Empire, the production company run by Gossip Girls Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will be producing, with Diane Ruggiero-Wright (iZombie, Veronica Mars) serving as writer and showrunner.

The original UK series was created by Howard Overman, and starred Antonia Thomas, Iwan Rheon, Lauren Socha, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Robert Sheehan as a group of young offenders undertaking community service, who obtain superpowers after being struck by lightning in a freak electrical storm.

This new version will star Ashleigh Lathrop (Sirens, Fifty Shades Darker), Tre Hall (Rebel), Allie MacDonald (Orphan Black, Cardinal) and Jake Cannavale (Nurse Jackie), and basically, follow the same premise, but in a US setting.

The characterisations are pretty much the same too. Lathrop plays spoiled, vapid, middle-class party girl Alicia, (played by Antonia Thomas in the original). Hall plays Curtis, the cocky football player with a promising career (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett in the original). Cannavale plays sneaky, egomaniac, con artist Nathan (Robert Sheehan in the UK version), and MacDonald plays Kelly, the trashy, street smart girl with a temper (aka the ‘chav’ played by Lauren Socha in the UK). Simon, the shy, social outcast played by Iwan Rheon in the original has yet to be cast.

Howard Overman is on board as exec producer along with Murray Ferguson of Clerkenwell Films who made the UK version. Schwartz, Savage and Ruggiero will also exec produce.

Whilst I’m not entirely sure a remake of ‘Misfits‘ is necessary, America has been doing better with US versions of UK shows in recent years. This is only a pilot at the moment, so it’ll be interesting to see if it makes it to series and if it ends up airing this side of the pond. We’ll keep you updated if we hear more.
