The Waverider will be getting a new teammate when ‘Legends of Tomorrow‘ returns in the Autumn. Tala Ashe has been cast as Zari Adrianna Tomaz, a new twist on an established DC comic book character.

Zari is a Muslim-American woman from the year 2030 who lives in a world of contradictions…  Technology has brought about an incredible change in her future, but human nature, unfortunately, hasn’t made the same leap forwards. Fear, prejudice and a lack of care for the planet have forced Zari to become a ‘grey hat hacktivist’. She’s a computer nerd with a wry, combative attitude, she is a woman living a double life who doesn’t realise that she has secret, latent powers derived from an ancient, mystical source.

Those of you that know your DC comic book history will recognise the name ‘Adrianna Tomaz’ as the refugee who is ‘gifted’ to Black Adam and becomes his wife after he gives her an amulet which gives her similar powers to his. She does eventually turn on him, becoming a heroine in her own right.

If you know the name of the character’s heroine persona, and the name of the amulet, you can probably see why the tv is keen to stay away from using it… She’s called ‘Isis’ after being given the ‘Amulet Of Isis’… Of obvious reasons, you can be fairly sure that name won’t be popping up in the tv show, hence the use of a future version of the character, and the changes in her backstory.

This also fits in with producer Marc Guggenheim’s cryptic comment from a few months ago, where he said “We’re drawing on an established character who is not from the comics. Let me be very clear: not original to the show but not from the comics and not from any of the other DC Arrowverse shows.”

This fits, as the character of Isis was originally developed for the live-action, Saturday morning, tv show ‘The Secrets of Isis’ in 1975, before being folded into DC Comics continuity a year later.

If you’re trying to place where you’ve seen Tala Ashe before, she played Anna Stone in ‘American Odyssey’ and R.J. Quigley in the brilliant ‘SMASH’.

Legends of Tomorrow‘ is due to return to Sky 1 in the Autumn.
