SDCC: BBC Drops Trailer For ‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special!

by Dave Elliott

Doctor Who had a panel today at SDCC, and used it as an opportunity to unveil a brand new trailer for Peter Capaldi’s final outing in the Christmas Special. Not only do we get to see more of David Bradley’s 1st Doctor, we also get to meet some new (although familiar) faces, and have some unexpected ones return!

Titled ‘Twice Upon A Time’, the Christmas Special will see Doctor’s 1 and 12 join forces in a new story, apparently set during World War I. There we meet ‘The Captain’, played by long time Who writer, and Steven Moffat’s ‘Sherlock’ partner, Mark Gatiss.

This will be the 4th time Gatiss has appeared on screen in an episode of Doctor Who, but they’re keeping quiet on the exact details of who this new character is. The only thing they have let slip is that he will have “a resonant echo in the whole Doctor Who story.” That seems to imply he may have some deeper connection in Who’s history… One possibility is that it’s Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, grandfather to the more well known Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart. We will have to wait and see…

The other big reveal is a final swan song for Pearl Mackie as The Doctor’s companion Bill. We thought we’d seen the last of her as she jetted off around the solar system with her watery girlfriend, Heather. Thankfully, she’s returned, so she and her Doctor can say goodbye properly, and have one last adventure!

Doctor Who‘ returns on Christmas Day 2017, for Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat’s final story, before Jodie Whittaker & Chris Chibnall take over in 2018.
