W Drops ‘The Strain’ From UKTV…

W (the channel formally known as Watch) will not be airing the 4th and final season of The Strain they announced on Twitter this evening…

This has come as a surprise, and a huge disappointment to fans in the UK, who have been following the adventures of Eph and the team, as they battle The Master and his Vampiric minions for the past 3 seasons.

I’m not entirely sure what’s going on over at UKTV right now, but there seems to be some sort of shift in policy regarding their US drama imports. This news comes not long after they announced that sister channel Dave would not be airing any more seasons of ‘Suits’. That show was thankfully picked up by Netflix, although that was no comfort to those without a subscription now having to fork out extra.

Both these cases seem like very odd decisions for the UKTV network. ‘Suits’ was dropped despite increased interest in the show following Megan Markle’s relationship with Price Harry, and ‘The Strain’ only has one last season to go. I understand they are running a business, and there may be financial reasons for dropping these shows, but in the case of ‘The Strain’, it does seem particularly harsh on fans to decide not to air the final season.

Our contact at UKTV has also expressed their personal disappointment at the show not coming back to their network, but it’s obviously out of their direct control. The official statement from W reads “W will not be picking up the final series of The Strain. We apologise to fans of the show and we hope for them it finds another UK broadcaster.”

If we hear of The Strain being available legally in the UK somewhere else, we’ll let you know!

A thoroughly piss poor decision this, after screening the first three seasons. One of the few original programmes among UKTV’s selection of repeats and Gladstone Brookes adverts.

Can only hope another channel pick it up. Just don’t get some of the thinking around programming. As an aside, why is the excellent, ‘The Americans’ hidden away on ITV Encore when ITV are showing endless repeats during the summer on their main channels?

My hope is Sky 1 will air it, it would seem that via Now TV the first 2 seasons are shown as Sky and now UKTV. Either way this is pathetic considering how close we would be to seeing the final season!

Just a thought maybe it’s related to them supposedly going FTA on sky rather than behind the paywall. I know it can cost a lot more money for those rights. I still think they have an obligation to their viewers to show the final season though seeing as they showed the first 3 seasons.

So Grimm is done, Suits is gone to Netflix and The Strain is gone.

I don’t see myself even accidentally turning into the UKTV channels any more!
