James Gunn Is Looking To Reboot ‘Starsky & Hutch’

Another day, another reboot – This time it’s ‘Starsky & Hutch’ being eyed for the revival treatment under the watchful gaze of ‘The Guardians Of the Galaxy’ director James Gunn!

Sony Pictures Television is the studio proposing the return of the detectives as a hour-long procedural, written by James Gunn, alongside his brother Brian & cousin Mark Gunn, who often work together as writing partners. James may potentially direct the pilot, depending on his availability.

The original series was created by William Blinn and starred Paul Michael Glaser & David Soul as the detective duo. Starsky (Glaser) was the street-wise, intense, ex-Army veteran. Hutch (Soul) was the more reserved, intellectual, ‘by-the-book’ cop. Taking to the streets of the fictional Bay City, California in their (now iconic) Ford Gran Torino, they’d often seek out help from their confidential informant, the jive-talking hip-cat, Huggy Bear (Antonio Fargas).

The show originally ran from 1975 to 1979, but there was a movie remake in 2004, with Ben Stiller taking the Starsky role and Owen Wilson as Hutch. Unlike the original series, the film was very much a comedy, so it will be interesting to see what direction the Gunns plan on going with the tv reboot.

‘Starsky & Hutch’ is currently only in development, but is being pitched to various networks and streaming services right now, so hopefully, we will hear more soon!
