Composer Jeff Russo Gives Us A Snippet Of The ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Main Title Theme
I think it would be fair to say, composer Jeff Russo has landed his dream gig when he was offered ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘. “I got that fateful, infamous call, where you pick up the phone and they want you to do Star Trek… My head exploded at that moment,” he says in the video above.
Fans will be glad to know there’s no “long road, getting from there to here” in Russo’s score. It’s very much back to traditional Trek. Strings, orchestration, and a familiarity which nods at Alexander Courage’s original 60’s Star Trek score.
“When I first started thinking what I would do for a main theme, I first needed to feel like I was in the world of Star Trek,” Russo continues. “Even though there’s a lot of action in our show, I wanted to really play into how these characters are feeling.”
For those of you unfamiliar with Jeff Russo, he is, as of this week, the Emmy winning composer of hit show ‘Fargo’. He also scores Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson’s ‘Power’, and has worked a host of other tv series over the years. In addition to scoring tv & film, he is a founding member, lead guitarist, and co-songwriter of two-time Grammy nominated, multi-platinum selling rock band, Tonic. We’ve interviewed Jeff a number of times for Geektown Radio, and you hear him talk about the music for ‘Fargo’, and working on ‘Power’.
‘Star Trek: Discovery‘ comes to Netflix UK from Monday, 25 September 2017.
