HBO Renews ‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’ For 3 More Seasons

Great news for fans of political satire. HBO has renewed Last Week Tonight with John Oliver through till 2020 the network announced yesterday. The renewal consists of 90 episodes (3 x 30 episode seasons), meaning the show won’t be leaving anytime soon!

It’s not a great surprise HBO are keen to keep the series around. Since its debut in 2014 ‘Last Week Tonight’ has picked up arm fulls of plaudits including WGA, Peabody, and various Emmy Awards, along with critical praise for its satirical reporting of news events.

“We are thrilled to have John Oliver as an integral part of the HBO family and to continue to share his comedic brilliance with the world,” commented HBO programming president Casey Bloys. “His extraordinary genius for rich and intelligent commentary is second to none.”

In the traditional British way of being unable to take a compliment, Oliver adds “First: I firmly disagree with everything Casey just said. Second: We’re very grateful to Richard Plepler, Casey and everyone at HBO for letting us continue to do whatever it is we actually do. And finally: We’d also like to thank our staff for all their hard work. We’re incredibly proud of all of you, and rather than tell you that to your face, we’d like to do it in the cold, dispassionate form of a press release.”

John Oliver rose to fame as a correspondent on ‘The Daily Show’, but it was his stint standing in for host Jon Stewart whilst he was on leave to direct a movie in 2013 that led to HBO poaching Oliver to front his own show.

The news of this renewal comes just a week after HBO also announced their satirical political talk show ‘Real Time With Bill Maher’ would also be staying on air till 2020.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver‘ airs Monday nights on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
