Bryan Fuller & Michael Green Have Quit As Showrunners Of ‘American Gods’

Bryan Fuller doesn’t seem to have much luck holding on to his tv shows. The American Gods showrunner has quit the series, along with co-showrunner Michael Green it has been announced today. Fuller had previously been the showrunner on ‘Star Trek: Discovery’, which he quit to work on ‘American Gods’

Whilst there hasn’t been any official reason given, it is believed to be a bust-up with producers, FremantleMedia, over budget and creative direction of the show. It should be noted, creative direction was also one of the reasons given for him leaving ‘Star Trek’ too…

On the budget side, it seems ‘American Gods’ was coming in at around $10 million per episode for the 2nd season. The average per episode for most cable/streaming shows is around $6-$8 million per episode, so it is on the higher side, putting it’s on a par with shows such as ‘The Crown’ or early seasons of ‘Game Of Thrones’. The new FremantleMedia Scripted Entertainment boss, Dante di Loreto, was apparently unhappy with forking out so much for ‘American Gods’ Season 2, and that caused the showrunning duo to leave.

No new showrunner has yet been announced, although it has been suggested, creator Neil Gaiman may step in as co-showrunner with someone else to fill the gap. Gaiman, however, will have his hands full, as he is also producing an adaptation of his novel with Terry Pratchett, ‘Good Omens’, for the BBC and Amazon.

Fuller also isn’t short of work, so this will leave him more time to focus on his reboot of ‘Amazing Stories’, which is in production for Apple. Michael Green is busy as well, working on a sequel to ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ and the Netflix drama ‘Raising Dion.’

It’s believed that the show has more than half the season 2 scripts written already. Although, if budget is an issue, there may need to be some rewrites before it hits the screen.

American Gods‘ Season 2 is due to premiere mid-2018, but it remains to be seen if these changes will affect that release. We’ll bring you more as we get it.
