‘The Night Manager’ Finds A Writer For Season 2

The Night Manager is edging closer to a possible 2nd Season it has been revealed today. Deadline is reporting that up-and-coming British writer Matthew Orton has been signed to develop a sequel to the massively popular mini-series.

Whilst ‘The Night Manager’ Season 2 hasn’t officially been confirmed yet, this is a very good sign it’s moving in the right direction. The tricky thing with Season 2 is that there is no John Le Carré novel on which to base the story. This would mark the first time someone has taken Le Carré’s work and expanded it beyond the original source material. Director Susanne Bier commented back in March that “we all very much want to do a season two, but the thing we absolutely do not want to do, is something that does not live up to the level of season one. That would be a really bad idea.”

Orton has been slowly making a name for himself within the industry since winning the BBC Writersroom Young Writers’ Competition in 2012. His debut feature screenplay ‘Clean’ was optioned by Michael Kuhn’s Qwerty Films in 2014, and in 2015, he participated in the Guiding Lights feature scheme, mentored by ‘Bridge of Spies’ writer, Matt Charman, and was named a ‘Star of Tomorrow’ by Screen International. Since then he sold his spec screenplay ‘Operation Finale’ to MGM, which is currently being filmed, directed by ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’s’ Chris Weitz, starring Oscar Isaac & Ben Kingsley. He also has a ‘Battle of Britain’ script optioned by 20th Century Fox, with Scott Free producing.

The first season of ‘The Night Manager’ saw Tom Hiddleston play ex-forces-turn-hotel-manager Jonathan Pine, who is recruited by Angela Burr (Olivia Colman) to infiltrate the inner circle of arms dealer Richard Onslow Roper (Hugh Laurie). At the time Season 1 writer, David Farr, commented “Given the characters, there is a potential for something more to happen, and I’m sure someone could find the right idea.”

It’s not clear who out of the original cast would return, but you have to assume they would be keen to bring back Tom Hiddleston and Olivia Colman. We will bring you more news as we get it.
