BBC America Cancels ‘Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency’ After 2 Seasons

BBC America has closed the doors on Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency after 2 seasons it was announced last night.

The show, which starred Samuel Barnett (‘Penny Dreadful’) in the titular role and Elijah Wood (‘Wilfred’, and some movies about Lords with Rings..) as his long-suffering sidekick, Todd, was an adaptation of the wildly popular novels by Douglas Adams (‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’.)

“We are beyond proud of this brilliant original series and so appreciative of the outstanding team behind it including Max Landis, Samuel Barnett, Elijah Wood, and many many others,” commented BBC America in a statement. “It was a privilege to work with this talented and passionate group of writers, producers and actors on these two seasons of Dirk. Thanks also to the passionate fans who embraced this fantastically novel world.”

Adapted by Max Landis (‘Chronicle’), ‘Dirk Gently’ is a somewhat unorthodox detective, in that he takes a ‘holistic’ approach to solving a crime, based on the ‘fundamental interconnectedness of all things.’ This leads him, and his rather reluctant sidekick Todd, though a bizarre adventure crossing unlikely paths with a bevvy of wild and sometimes dangerous characters. Each season features an overarching mystery, with each episode bringing them a few random steps closer to the truth.

Although no word has come from Netflix yet, it should be noted the streaming service was co-producing ‘Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency’ with BBC America and broadcasting it outside of the US. It’s not inconceivable, if its streaming numbers are good enough, that Netflix may decide to continue the series solo. But as of right now, it is classed as cancelled. We will update you if that changes.
