Netflix Shows to Look Forward to in 2018

As the year draws to an inevitable close, it is easy to look back on a wonderful year of television and film. We were given a huge number of marvellous new shows such as the Punisher and Futureman, whereas there was a return from some good old favourites such as the second season of Stranger Things and the penultimate season of Game of Thrones. We’ve been spoiled for choice, no doubt thanks to Netflix and all the other alternative streaming sites out there constantly pushing for evermore innovative and ground-breaking content. But 2018 is fast approaching and it’s time to set our eyes on the future and all its glory and binge-able high definition features. Here are some of the best gems to look out for when the new year rolls around.

Black Mirror, Season 4 –  29th December 2017

While not exactly being released in 2018, it’s close enough. Come December 29th 2017, Black Mirror is gracing screens once again with six brand new untold stories. With episode names such as “Hang the DJ” and “Metalhead” and featuring an all-star cast, you can be sure that these episodes are going to live up to the extremely well-produced and harrowingly real stories we’ve come to know, love and fear from the Netflix favourites. Expect twisted, Tinderesque tales of dating, frightening depictions of our own addiction to and dependency on technology, and parallel universes where the effect of technology on our world is mirrored back in terrifying reflections. Is it scary? Yes. Can we wait? No.

Altered Carbon – 2nd February 2018

Caught on the wave of the current cyberpunk craze and hot on the heels of productions such as Blade Runner 2049 and other synthwave shows, Altered Carbon will be hitting our screens (and mobile devices) come February the 2nd. It’s a classic noir story based on the novel of the same name by Richard Morgan that tells the tale of Takeshi Kovacs, a mercenary who lives in a world where going to prison is a mental game, bodies have become a commodity and living forever is only a matter of how much you’re willing to pay. With Akira-like cityscapes and big names such as Joel Kinnaman and James Purefoy attached to the project, it’s sure to be one of the biggest shows of 2018.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs – 2018

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs – The Coen Brothers

If you have a penchant for westerns and films like Fargo, then there’s a good chance you’ll love the newest creation of the Coen brothers, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. A six-part anthology series based during the days of the American West, each episode will tell a different story centred around the Western frontier as the pioneers expanded their territories. It stars James Franco and Zoe Kazan, so the calibre of acting is set to be huge. Part of the series is also being filmed in New Mexico, which is where the Coen brothers shot two of their other well-known favourites, No Country for Old Men and True Grit.

The Umbrella Academy – 2018

We’ve been excited about this series ever since the streaming giant announced they would attempt to bring Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba’s 2007 unique Dark Horse comic book series to life. We got even more excited when they announced the cast would include people such as Ellen Page (‘X-Men’, ‘Inception’), Robert Sheehan (‘Misfits’, ‘Fortitude’) and Tom Hopper (‘Merlin’, ‘Game Of Thrones’). Set in a world where, at the instant of the final blow in a cosmic battle, 43 superhuman infants are simultaneously born to unconnected women who showed no previous signs of pregnancy. Seven of the super-powered infants survive and an alien in human disguise called Reginald Hargreeves, A.K.A. ‘The Monocle’ adopts and raises them as the superhero team; ‘The Umbrella Academy’ preparing them for an unnamed future world-ending event.

Remaking a classic is a risky business, but if anyone can do it, it’s Netflix! Taking its cues from the original 60’s series, the show centres around the Robinson family, who is forced to come together in a time of crisis. Stranded light years from their intended destination, they find themselves battling a strange new alien environment and also their own personal demons. Equal parts family drama and sci-fi adventure, it is a survival story for the ages. This new version stars Toby Stephens (Black Sails) who plays the father & commander John Robinson, Molly Parker (House of Cards) who plays mother & biochemist Maureen Robinson, and Parker Posey (Search Party, Louie) who takes on the role of the scheming Dr Smith, switched to a female character for this iteration.
