US Network FX Order Sci-fi Pilot ‘Devs’ From Writer Alex Garland

US Network FX has given a pilot order to a new sci-fi tech drama from acclaimed writer/director Alex Garland it has been announced.

Whilst you might not recognise the name Alex Garland immediately, there is a very good chance you’ve seen his work. He first came to prominence with his novel ‘The Beach’, which was then turned in to the Danny Boyle movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio. He continued that partnership with Boyle writing the screenplay for ’28 Days Later…’ and ‘Sunshine’. Garland followed that with the screenplay for ‘Dredd’ which starred the brilliant Karl Urban, and then turned his hand to directing along with writing in the critically acclaimed ‘Ex Machina’.

Garland’s pilot, ‘Devs’, is based around a young computer engineer called Lily who is investigating a secretive development division of her employer. She works for a cutting-edge tech company based in San Francisco, which she believes is behind the disappearance of her boyfriend.

“Devs is a captivating series from Alex Garland, building on his track record of groundbreaking work that challenges our notion of humanity amid the seemingly boundless promise of technology,” comments Eric Schrier, President of Original Programming for FX. “We’re all the more thrilled that Alex will direct and executive produce with our partners at DNA TV and Scott Rudin Productions.”

Garland is just coming off the back of his second outing as a writer/director with the movie ‘Annihilation’, which has been extremely well received so far. The ‘Devs’ pilot comes under an overall deal he has with FX Productions. Garland is set to write and direct all eight episodes of the series, assuming it gets picked up.

Whilst the description of ‘Devs’ doesn’t give a whole lot to go on, based on Garland’s track record, it will definitely be something to keep an eye on. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
