‘Peaky Blinders’ Could Be Heading For Seasons 6 AND 6 Plus… Ermm… A Ballet…

Steven Knight, the creator of highly acclaimed BBC series Peaky Blinders, took to the stage at the Birmingham Press Club this weekend to chat about his work, and confirmed that the show will be back for at least one (and possibly two) more series on top of the upcoming 5th Season.

“We are definitely doing 6 and we will probably do 7,” he commented at the event. “We’ve talked to Cillian Murphy and he’s all for it, and the rest of the principal cast are in for it.”

This is an interesting turn of events, as the long-held belief, based on comments Knight had made previously, was that the series would probably come to an end at Season 5. However, it seems Knight and Murphy aren’t ready to hang up their (razor filled) flat caps just yet. I should point out, it doesn’t seem like these are officially done deals with the BBC yet, but it’s extremely unlikely the broadcaster will turn down the chance to bring more seasons of the BAFTA Award-winning, highest-rated, most watched, Birmingham gangster drama to screen…

The series stars Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, a notorious 1920’s Birmingham crime boss and leader of the fearsome Peaky Blinders gang. Together with his brothers and Aunt Polly (Helen McCrory), the group maintain a stranglehold on the city whilst battling both the law and rival gangs to stay on top. The show also stars Paul Anderson, Kate Phillips, Finn Cole, and Aimee-Ffion Edwards, and has had guest appearances from actors such as Tom Hardy, Adrien Brody, Aidan Gillen and Alexander Siddig.

Interestingly, Knight also mentioned that he had been approached by a ballet company looking to develop a version for the stage. “I had a meeting with Ballet Rambert who want to do Peaky Blinders – The Ballet. I’m saying ‘why not?’,” he commented. “I wasn’t supposed to say anything about it, but I don’t mind talking about things.“

The London based Rambert are one of Britain’s oldest dance companies and commission shows using highly acclaimed choreographers, composers and designers from around the world. They are currently performing an adaptation of Pedro Calderón de la Barca’s ‘Life is a Dream’ from choreographer Kim Brandstrup and filmmakers the Quay Brothers.

Although Rambert are London based, they do tour, and have shows coming up in Norway and Edinburgh. Should they decide to move forward with a ‘Peaky Blinders’, Knight added: “I don’t know where they would do it, but there was a view to premiering it here in Birmingham.”

Peaky Blinders is expected to start shooting Season 5 in the Autumn with a view to it airing in 2019. We’ll let you know if and when we get official confirmation on Seasons 6 and 7.
