As SDCC closes, one final show trailer popped up over the weekend for The Orville‘ Season 2.

From Emmy Award-winning executive producer and creator Seth MacFarlane (‘Family Guy’, ‘Ted’), the show is a live-action, one-hour space adventure series set 400 years in the future that follows The Orville, a mid-level exploratory spaceship.

Its crew, both human and alien, face the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the familiar, often humorous, problems of everyday life. The ensemble series stars MacFarlane as the ship’s Commanding Officer and Adrianne Palicki (‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’, ‘Friday Night Lights’) as his ex-wife, who’s assigned as his First Officer.

Despite its success in Season 1, a number of critics had issues with the wildly shifting tone of the show throughout its freshman run. MacFarlane thinks that has now been sorted. “I think what you’re going to see in Season 2 is a show that’s even more comfortable in its footing in terms of existing in that Goldilocks zone,” commented creator MacFarlane at his SDCC panel. “This show was a tonal experiment of sorts. Comedy and sci-fi when you blend them together, they don’t always mix well. In features they do, but television is kind of hard to sustain. The pleasant surprise for me was that fans and viewers were willing to let us tell a story. They weren’t waiting for the next joke to come.”

“The experiment was a success,” adds executive producer Brannon Braga. “The storytelling is even more assertive and bold, and there’s some really daring narrative stuff that happens.”

The Orville‘ airs on Fox in the UK, with Season 2 expected to arrive in 2019.
