‘Judge Dredd: Mega-City One’ Pilot Script Completed By Dredd Comic Writer Rob Williams

We’re still rounding up stories which popped up at SDCC over the weekend, and one announcement that slipped by was that the pilot script for the ‘Judge Dredd: Mega-City One’ tv series has been completed. Not only that, it was revealed the man penning the script is veteran ‘Judge Dredd’ comic book supremo, Rob Williams.

‘Judge Dredd: Mega-City One’ is set in the 22nd century, the US East Coast has become the crowded and crime-ridden megalopolis of Mega-City One. The show will follow a team of Judges – enforcement officers with the power instantly convict, sentence, and execute offenders – as they deal with the challenges the future-shocked 22nd century throws at them.

Mark Stern, who shepherded in shows such as ‘Battlestar Galactica’, ‘Warehouse 13’, ‘Eureka’, ‘Defiance’, and ‘Stargate: Atlantis’ whilst at Syfy, and is set to exec produce for IM Global, along with IM’s CEO Stuart Ford. Jason Kingsley, CEO of Rebellion Productions, a new division of the company who own Dredd, will exec produce, with Rebellion’s Brian Jenkins as series producer. Rebellion also exec produced the well-received 2012 ‘Dredd’ film, starring Karl Urban.

Rob Williams, who penned the ‘Judge Dredd: Mega-City One’ pilot, has been writing Dredd in the 2000 AD comic book for many years and is responsible for large arcing stories such as ‘Trifecta’, ‘Titan’ and the ‘Enceladus’. He is serving as creative lead on the new show, and has already mapped out two years worth of stories, should the pilot go to series.

“It’s been really exciting to be working with Rob on the pilot,” series producer Jenkins commented in a statement. “We have a really talented team here at Rebellion Productions and I’m really proud of them. Jason and I have been busy looking at locations and laying out season one as we gear up, to move forward into pre-production.”

“I’ve read the pilot script by Rob and the team, and got that same thrill I did when I first discovered Judge Dredd,” adds Kingsley, Rebellion CEO. “As we drive this project forward I’m always surprised by how much effort goes on behind-the-scenes to bring something like Mega-City One to the screen. I’m very pleased with how the whole project is coming together and looking forward to more exciting announcements in the coming months.”

Whilst Judge Dredd will feature in the new series, the plan would be to follow a team of Judges, not just Dredd himself. Karl Urban, who played the role superbly in the 2012 film, commented back in August last year that he was “in discussions” with Rebellion about returning to the role. He added “If they write the material and give Dredd something to do and give him a function, I will be there. I would love to.”

‘Judge Dredd: Mega-City One’ is due to go into pre-production soon, so that would hopefully mean a pilot will be filmed later this year/early next year. Assuming all goes well, that would likely mean a release date of late 2019 at the earliest, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
