It’s the news fans of HBO’s western drama have been waiting for. The US cable giant has finally greenlit a ‘Deadwood’ movie.

Set in 1876, ‘Deadwood’ follow the population of an outlaw settlement in the Black Hills of South Dakota, when the richest gold strike in U.S. history drew a throng of restless misfits to the area. The original show ran for 3 Seasons from 2004-2006 to huge critical acclaim, and garnered 28 Emmy nominations, winning 8 over the course of its run.

“All of these people worked hard to get this together,” commented HBO programming president Casey Bloys at the TCA summer press tour. “It’s been a logistics nightmare getting all the cast members’ schedules together, but we are there. It is greenlit.”

That cast has been pretty busy in recent years, so you can see why this has been a headache to organise. Of the two main leads, Timothy Olyphant, who played Sheriff Seth Bullock went on to star in ‘Justified’ and ‘Santa Clarita Diet’. Ian McShane, who played pimp and entertainment entrepreneur Al Swearengen, popped up in ‘Ray Donovan’, and is currently starring in ‘American Gods’. He also appears in the ‘John Wick’ films and will be in the upcoming ‘Hellboy’ movie. The show also starred Molly Parker (‘House of Cards’, ‘Lost In Space’), Jim Beaver (‘Supernatural’), John Hawkes (‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’), Paula Malcomson (‘Ray Donovan’), Robin Weigert (‘Sons of Anarchy’, ‘Dietland’) and Kim Dickens (‘Fear the Walking Dead’).

The original series never really had a proper conclusion, so fans of ‘Deadwood’ have been clamouring for something to round off the story. The plan is currently to shoot the movie in October this year, with an eye on releasing it in Spring 2019, although that date is not set in stone. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
