Netflix has given a 10-episode series order to an adaptation of comic book ‘Locke & Key‘ the streaming service announced today.
‘Locke & Key’ is a horror/fantasy series that revolves around three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Massachusetts only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers and abilities. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them.
The show is being written by Joe Hill who co-created the origin comic book with Gabriel Rodriguez. Carlton Cuse (‘The Strain’, ‘Bates Motel’, ‘Colony’, ‘Lost’) and Meredith Averill (‘Jane the Virgin’, ‘The Good Wife’) will serve as showrunners, and will exec produce alongside Hill.
The book, which is published by IDW Publishing, has garnered both awards and acclaim during its ten-year run. It has been translated into dozens of languages across the globe and has sold millions of copies worldwide.
This is not the first time the comic book has been tried as a tv series. The first attempt landed at Fox in 2011, and was piloted with Miranda Otto as lead, but the network opted not to pick it up. It was then piloted earlier this year by Hulu with Frances O’Connor as lead and looked likely to be picked up. But after some management changes at the US streaming company, they also decided not to move forward. It was that version which Netflix swooped it to save, although they will be completely recast from the Hulu pilot and the scripts are being redeveloped.
Netflix hasn’t given a premiere date for ‘Locke & Key‘ yet, but we would expect it to land in 2019.
