Lucasfilm has made some interesting casting announcements this evening about the casting on ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’, which will begin filming at London’s Pinewood Studios on 1st August, 2018.

As expected, the returning cast members include Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, and Billie Lourd. However, they’ve also announced veteran Star Wars actors Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams, who will reprise his role as Lando Calrissian, will all also appear, along with Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa.

This will be done by using previously unreleased footage shot for ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’. “We desperately loved Carrie Fisher,” comments director JJ Abrams. “Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast, or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie, we have found a way to honour Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.”

The inclusion of Mark Hamill is also an interesting one, given the ending to ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’. Could we be seeing a blue-glowy Luke in the upcoming film, or has Luke found a way to cheat death? Has he been chatting with Darth Plagueis? We’ll have to wait and see.

New people joining the cast of Episode IX include Naomi Ackie (‘The Five’, ‘Doctor Who’) and legendary ‘Withnail and I’ star, Richard E. Grant. As this is Star Wars, there is, of course, no hint yet as to who they might be playing.

Composer John Williams, who has scored every chapter in the Star Wars saga since 1977’s ‘A New Hope’, will also return, possibly for the last time, to the franchise.

‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ will land in UK cinemas on the 19th December 2019.
