Matt Smith Travels To A Galaxy Far Far Away In ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’

Former ‘Doctor Who’ star Matt Smith is heading back out into space as he signs on to join ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ it was announced yesterday.

At the moment, all we know is he will play a “key role” in the upcoming movie which sees JJ Abrams take the helm once again after Colin Trevorrow left due to the old problem of “creative differences”. The film will see the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Oscar Isaac as Poe, and Adam Driver as Kylo Ren. They will be joined by some of the original Star Wars cast including Mark Hamill as Luke and Anthony Daniels as C-3PO. Billy Dee Williams will reprise the role of Lando Calrissian for the first time in the film franchise since the original trilogy, and the late Carrie Fisher will appear using previously unseen footage from ‘The Force Awakens’.

It’s not clear if Smith’s role will be on the Rebels or First Order side, but given he’s British, there is a fairly good chance he’ll be working for the bad guys. The actor is best known for his role as The 11th Doctor, along with starring as Prince Philip in ‘The Crown’. He appears next as cult leader Charles Manson in the movie ‘Charlie Says’, which premieres at the Venice Film Festival this coming weekend.

Smith joins other newcomers Naomi Ackie (‘The Five’, ‘Doctor Who’) and legendary ‘Withnail and I’ star, Richard E. Grant. Once again, as this is ‘Star Wars’, there is no hint yet as to who they might be playing.

‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ will land in UK cinemas on the 19th December 2019.
