Gotham’s Crystal Reed Takes Female Lead In DCU’s ‘Swamp Thing’

It would appear that ‘Gotham’ star Crystal Reed is sticking with DC Comics as she takes the female lead role in the DC Universe upcoming drama Swamp Thing.

When CDC Doctor Abby Arcane (Reed) returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland (still to be cast) – only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous – and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.

Abby Arcane in the show is described as “smart and caring”, with a “strong sense of empathy”. The character first appeared in 1973, and started out as friends with Swamp Thing, before eventually becoming his wife and having a child together. The comic book version of the character also has the abilities of telepathy, empathy and telekinesis, but it’s not clear at the moment if her special powers will make it onto the screen version.

Crystal Reed has recently been starring as Sofia Falcone in the 4th Season of ‘Gotham’. However, she will also be extremely well known to fans of ‘Teen Wolf’, where she played Allison Argent.

‘Swamp Thing’ has been around in the comic books since the 1970’s and over the years has had huge names in the comic book world work on it such as Alan Moore, Grant Morrison, Mark Millar, Brian K. Vaughan and Scott Snyder. It’s not the first time ol’ Swampy has been attempted in live-action, as horror maestro Wes Craven made 2 movie versions in 1982 and 1989, and there was a tv series which ran for 3 seasons from 90 to 93. There have also been a number of animated series.

Swamp Thing‘ is expected to premiere on DC Universe in 2019. We still don’t have any details about the international rollout of the streaming service, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
