Gillian Anderson To Play Margaret Thatcher In ‘The Crown’ Season 4

It seems Netflix can’t get enough of Gillian Anderson. She’s not only starring in their new show ‘Sex Education’, but has now landed a role on the 4th Season of critically acclaimed drama The Crown.

‘The Crown’ tells the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world – Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street – and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century.

Anderson is set to play former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, as the 4th season works its way through the 80’s political landscape of Britain. Thatcher became the UK’s first female Prime Minister in 1979, after defeating Labour under James Callaghan in a General Election following a vote of no confidence in the government. She held the office until 1990 when lost a leadership challenge and was replaced by John Major. Thatcher was, I think it’s fair to say, one of the most divisive figures in British politics due to things such as her treatment of unions, privatisation of infrastructure, and policies such as the poll tax. She worked with three different US presidents starting with Jimmy Carter, then Ronald Reagan, and lastly, George H. W. Bush.

The upcoming 3rd Season of ‘The Crown’ will see an all-new, more age-appropriate, cast take the story through the ’70s and into the ’80s in Season 4. They will then be switched out again for an older cast in seasons 5 and 6. Season 3 has Olivia Colman as HRH Queen Elizabeth II, replacing Claire Foy, and Outlander’ star Tobias Menzies replacing Matt Smith as Prince Philip. Helena Bonham Carter, takes over the role of HRH Princess Margaret from Vanessa Kirby, and Ben Daniels (‘The Exorcist’, ‘Rogue One’) will play of 1st Earl of Snowdon, Antony Armstrong-Jones, replacing the outgoing Matthew Goode.

Joining them will be Josh O’Connor (‘The Durrells’) as Prince Charles, Marion Bailey (‘Him & Her’, ‘Mr. Turner’) as the Queen Mother, Erin Doherty (‘Les Misérables’) as Princess Anne, and Emerald Fennell (‘Call The Midwife’) as Camilla Shand/Parker Bowles. Jason Watkins (Trollied’, ‘W1A’) also joins the cast in the role of Prime Minister, Harold Wilson.

No exact date has been set for The Crown‘ Season 3 yet, but it will arrive later this year on Netflix.
