Netflix Officially Cancels ‘The Punisher’ & ‘Jessica Jones’

We knew it was coming, but Netflix has announced the cancellation of The Punisher and ripped off the band-aid early with Jessica Jones, saying the upcoming 3rd Season will be its last.

‘The Punisher’ starred Jon Bernthal as former Marine-turned-vigilante Frank Castle, whilst ‘Jessica Jones’ stars Krysten Ritter in the title role. The cancellation of these two series brings an end to the deal between Marvel and Netflix following the previous cancellations of ‘Daredevil’, ‘Iron Fist’ and ‘Luke Cage’.

“Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix,” commented Netflix in a statement today. “Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come.”

They went on to say “In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones. We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others. We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”

The news doesn’t come as a huge surprise, given Netflix’s decision to kill the three other shows, but still doesn’t make it any easier. There has been talk of reviving them somewhere else, although nothing is yet confirmed. Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+, is a possibility, although they had previously said they would like to keep that “PG13”, so these series wouldn’t work in their current format. The other option would be to move them onto Hulu, where Disney has a majority stake, along with the recently announced Marvel animated shows. However, as of right now, they are cancelled by Netflix.

Jessica Jones‘ Season 3 is due to arrive on Netflix later in 2019.
