Netflix Renews ‘The Umbrella Academy’ For Season 2

Netflix has handed out a 2nd Season to wonderfully strange superhero drama The Umbrella Academy the streaming service has announced today.

The best way I can describe the series is a family superhero drama unlike any other. It is beautifully cast, and wonderfully weird. The story is based in a reality where, on the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world.

Season 1 saw the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father’s passing and having to work as a team once more to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.

The main ‘Umbrella Academy’ cast stars Ellen Page (‘X-Men’, ‘Juno’, ‘Inception’) as Vanya, Tom Hopper (‘Game Of Thrones’, ‘Merlin’, ‘Black Sails’) as Luther (aka Spaceboy), Emmy Raver-Lampman (‘Hamilton’, ‘Hair’) as Allison (aka The Rumor), Robert Sheehan (‘Misfits’, ‘Fortitude’) as Klaus (aka The Séance), David Castañeda (‘Switched at Birth’, ‘Jane the Virgin’) as Diego (aka The Kraken), and Aidan Gallagher (‘Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn’) as Number Five (aka The Boy). Cameron Britton (‘Mindhunter’), Colm Feore (‘House of Cards’), Adam Godley (‘Breaking Bad’), Ashley Madekwe (‘Revenge’) and two-time Academy Award nominee Mary J. Blige (‘Mudbound’) also star.

‘The Umbrella Academy’ is based on the comic book series created and written by Gerard Way, illustrated by Gabriel Bá, and published by Dark Horse Comics. The show is produced by Universal Cable Productions. Netflix has given a Season 2 order of 10 one-hour episodes, which will see Steve Blackman (‘Fargo’, ‘Altered Carbon’) return as Showrunner and Executive Producer. Executive Producers also set to return alongside Blackman include Jeff F. King (EP), Mike Richardson (EP), Keith Goldberg (EP), Gerard Way (Co-EP), and Gabriel Bá (Co-EP).

We recently had the opportunity to chat with stars Emmy Raver-Lampman and Tom Hopper at this year’s MCM Birmingham Comic Con, where they talk about working on the show and filming Season 1. You can find that video below, or on our YouTube channel with lots of other video interviews from the event.

If you missed The Umbrella Academy‘ Season 1, go and watch it on Netflix right now. You really must, it’s brilliant.
