Marc Warren To Star In ‘Van Der Valk’ Remake

After his recent stint on the utterly brilliant ‘Flack’, Marc Warren’s next gig is to take on the role of Van Der Valk in a remake of the classic detective drama.

The new series remake comes from Company Pictures, the people behind shows such as ‘Inspector George Gently’, ‘The Missing’, ‘Bulletproof’, and ‘The White Princess’, alongside All3Media International. Chris Murray, who has written on shows such as ‘Midsomer Murders’, ‘Lewis’, ‘Casualty’, and ‘Missing’, is creating the 3 feature-length episodes.

For those of you unfamiliar with ‘Van Der Valk’, the series follows a street smart and unapologetic Dutch detective (Warren) as he navigates the lively and enigmatic city of Amsterdam, solving mysterious crimes using astute human observation and inspired detection. The original show was produced by Thames Television starring Barry Foster and ran for five series from 1972 to 1992.

Marc Warren has most recently been starring in W channel’s superb PR drama ‘Flack’ opposite Anna Paquin, and is currently working on ITV’s period drama ‘Beecham House’. His huge list of tv credits include shows such as Netflix drama ‘Safe’ with Michael C. Hall, BBC’s ‘The Musketeers’, Sky One’s ‘Mad Dogs’, ‘The Good Wife’ and, of course, ‘Hustle’.

According to Deadline, who broke the news, the new 90min episodes will be filmed on location in Amsterdam, and will be produced by Michele Buck (‘Agatha Christie’s Poirot’) and All3Media International boss Louise Pedersen.

“Van der Valk is a fantastic example of our proactive scripted development and investment strategy,” comments Pedersen. “We are confident that there is global demand for top quality procedural detective stories and, as the queen of detective shows, Michele Buck and her team at Company Pictures are brilliantly placed to deliver us a fantastic new series in this genre.”

“Van der Valk is one of television’s most iconic detectives and it is my great pleasure to bring him back for a 2019 audience. The drama will centre on three key ingredients: a distinctive central character, stunning settings and engaging crime stories, as producer Michele Buck.  “Partnering with All3Media International will ensure we deliver a new detective drama brand that holds strong appeal for viewers worldwide.”

At the moment, it’s unclear exactly which UK channel will air the series. The original drama was produced for ITV, so we’d presume they would be in the running to pick this up. However, a lot has changed since 1992, and with it coming from a separate independent production company, it’s possible it could end up on a different UK broadcaster. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
