Netflix Orders ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’ Interactive Special

It seems Netflix isn’t completely done with Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, as the streaming service announces an interactive special to premiere in 2020.

Created by ’30 Rock’s’ Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, the series stars Ellie Kemper (‘The LEGO Batman Movie’, ‘The Office’) as Kimmy, a 29-year-old woman who is adjusting to life in New York City after spending 15 years in a doomsday cult. The relentlessly upbeat girl is determined to not become a victim, as she reclaims her life and starts over in the Big Apple.

It was announced last year that creators Tina Fey & Robert Carlock had decided to end the show with Season 4, which has now been broadcast. However, there were “ongoing talks” with Netflix about a possible movie to finish things off. Now it seems those plans have morphed into a project using their ‘Bandersnatch’ style interactive experience.

“We’re thrilled to announce that we’re about to start production on an all-new Interactive Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt special, set to debut on Netflix in 2020,” commented Fey at an event in New York last night. “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was one of the first original comedy series on Netflix, and now it will be its first interactive comedy event. Fans will be able to make choices on behalf of our characters, taking different story paths with, of course, different jokes. I think it’s a great fit for our show and will be a great way to officially complete the series.”

The comedy has done amazingly well for the streaming service, having picked up 18 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including 3 nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series. It also had various nominations and wins with the Television Critics Association and Writers Guild of America.

Fey and Carlock exec produce the series with Jeff Richmond (’30 Rock’), Sam Means (‘The Daily Show’, ’30 Rock’) and David Miner (’30 Rock’, ‘Master of None’, ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’). The comedy is a production of Universal Television, Little Stranger, Inc., Bevel Gears, and 3 Arts Entertainment for Netflix.

The ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt‘ interactive special will premiere on Netflix UK and around the world in 2020.
