Netflix Reveals First Top Ten Lists Of Most Watched Shows In The UK
In some interesting and unexpected news from the notoriously secretive streaming service, Netflix has released information on the Top Ten shows and films people in the UK have been watching in April 2019. Whilst they don’t give out any actual viewing figures, it might give some indication of what series might be safe from the chopping block when it comes to renewals. At the very least, it might give you some new ideas for shows to watch when scrolling through the massive Netflix catalogue!
To compile the lists they looked at the most-watched individual season of a show, film or special (regardless of when it launched). The also defined “watched” as meaning “members finished at least 70% of one episode,” and confirmed that they haven’t included kids shows. At the moment, this is an experiment by the streaming service to see if the “information is useful” to viewers, but have said they may stop or tweak things depending on the reaction it gets.
On the scripted drama side, ‘Z Nation’ adjacent zombie drama ‘Black Summer’ tops the list, followed by Ricky Gervais’ utterly brilliant ‘After Life’, with ‘Riverdale’ coming in third, ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ forth, and ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ in fifth. Out of those five shows, three are Netflix Originals, with ‘Riverdale’ and ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ being the only two bought-in dramas, so that has to feel good for the folk at Netflix. It’s interesting to note that the recently cancelled ‘Santa Clarita Diet’ sits at eighth place in the UK list, but whilst it might be popular here, it’s possible the zombie series might not be getting the same love worldwide.
Over in documentaries, somewhat predictably, the David Attenborough narrated nature series ‘Our Planet’ tops the list followed by ‘The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann’ and ‘Homecoming: A film by Beyoncé’. On the film front, teen romantic comedy ‘The Perfect Date’ takes the top spot followed by Kevin Costner/Woody Harrelson crime movie ‘The Highwaymen’, and Kiernan Shipka/Stanley Tucci horror flick ‘The Silence’.
In reality tv, the interactive series ‘You vs Wild’, which gives viewers a chance to help or abuse Bear Grylls, comes top. That’s followed by ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ and ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked!’. On non-English language shows, Swedish crime drama ‘Quicksand’ tops the list, followed by Italian crime drama ‘The Ruthless’, with French sci-fi series ‘Osmosis’ taking third place.
They also released an overall list of most viewed tv and film on Netflix UK in April, which sees ‘Our Planet’ come top as the most watch thing overall, beating ‘The Perfect Date’ into second place, and placing ‘The Highwaymen’ in third. You can see the full lists below:
