ABC Picks Up Dramas ‘Emergence’ & ‘The Baker And The Beauty’

ABC handed series orders to a couple of new shows last night. Emergence, which is a genre thriller starring ‘Fargo’s Allison Tolman, and romantic comedy The Baker And The Beauty, based on an Israeli series of a similar name.

Emergence is a character-driven genre thriller that stars Allison Tolman (‘Good Girls’, ‘Fargo’) as Jo, a sheriff who takes in a young child that she finds near the site of a mysterious accident who has no memory of what has happened. The investigation draws her into a conspiracy larger than she ever imagined, and the child’s identity is at the centre of it all.

The series comes from Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, creators of ‘Kevin (Probably) Saves the World’ and ‘Reaper’, alongside director Paul McGuigan (‘Sherlock’, ‘Victor Frankenstein’) and ABC Studios. Interestingly, the series was originally bought by NBC last year and they developed the pilot, but after some staff changes at the top of ABC, the new exec team loved the pilot, so when NBC said they were passing on the show, ABC swooped in to save it.

The drama also stars Alexa Swinton (‘Billions’) as the child Piper, along with ‘Scrubs’ star Donald Faison, Owain Yeoman (‘The Mentalist’), Robert Bailey Jr. (‘The Night Shift’) and Zabryna Guevara (‘New Amsterdam’).

The Baker And The Beauty stars Victor Rasuk (‘Jack Ryan’, ‘Colony’) and Nathalie Kelley (‘Dynasty’, ‘Vampire Diaries’) in the title roles. The story follows Daniel Garcia (Rasuk), who is working in the family bakery and doing everything that his loving Cuban parents and siblings expect him to do. But on a wild Miami night, he meets Noa Hamilton (Kelley), an international superstar and fashion mogul, and his life moves into the spotlight. Will this unlikely couple upend their lives to be together and pull their families into a culture clash?

The show is based on the Israeli series ‘Beauty and the Baker’ and comes from Dean Georgaris, creator of short-lived drama ‘The Brave’, and screenwriter of ‘The Meg’. It has been a good year for Georgaris, who also got his Jimmy Smits-led legal drama ‘Bluff City Law’ picked up over on NBC.

The series also stars Carlos Gomez (‘Madam Secretary’, ‘NCIS: New Orleans’), Dan Bucatinsky (’24: Legacy’, ‘Scandal’), Lisa Vidal (‘Rosewood’, ‘Being Mary Jane’), Michelle Veintimilla (‘Gotham’s Firefly), David Del Rio (‘Pitch Perfect’, ‘Grease Live!’) and Belissa Escobedo.

As they have only just been announced, its too early to know if or when these shows might land in the UK, but we’ll keep you up to date should we hear anything.
