‘This is Us’ Handed 3 Season Renewal, Taking It To Season 6
It seemed odd that NBC hadn’t yet announced the renewal status of its flagship megahit drama ‘This is Us‘, and now we know why. In a rare move, the network has handed the show a huge three-season renewal, taking it up to Season 6.
The brilliant family drama follows the Pearson family across the decades: from Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) as young parents in the 1980s to their 37-year-old kids Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) searching for love and fulfilment in the present day. This grounded, life-affirming dramedy reveals how the tiniest events in our lives impact who we become, and how the connections we share with each other can transcend time, distance and even death.
‘This is Us’ was always going to get another season, but it did seem strange for NBC to wait so late in the day to announce, so it was clear something was afoot. Whilst some shows do get two-season renewals, it is extremely rare for a drama to be picked up for more than that. However, ‘This is Us’ is one of the biggest show on the network, is critically-acclaimed, and has picked up a multitude of awards, so you can see why NBC are keen to make sure it stays where it is.
A big multi-season renewal can also be a sign that a show is coming to an end, as it was when ‘Big Bang Theory’ scored a three-season renewal. That may or may not be the case here, but when asked earlier today if Season 6 would be the final one for ‘This Is Us’, NBC co-chairman Paul Telegdy commented, “We’re keeping it open for now. Creator Dan Fogelman has a plan for the show, for now, it’s being picked up for three more seasons.”
“In a television landscape with nearly 500 original scripted series, there are very few, if any, that have the critical and cultural impact of This Is Us, and we couldn’t be more proud to bring fans three more seasons of a show that so well represents the NBC brand,” added Lisa Katz and Tracey Pakosta, Presidents of Scripted Programming, NBC Entertainment in a statement. “A huge thank you and congratulations to our executive producers, cast and crew who reach new heights every week with the show’s inventive and compelling storytelling.”
‘This is Us‘ airs on More4 in the UK, with the 3rd Season expected to premiere some time over Summer 2019.
