Netflix Commissions Series Based On Mark Millar’s ‘The Magic Order’

UPDATE (09/10/20) – Netflix has reversed this decision and opted not to move forward with the series, although they may return to it in the future.

Netflix has handed a series order to a new magic/fantasy series based on The Magic Order comic book series from Mark Millar the streaming service announced today.

We live in a world where we’ve never seen a monster and ‘The Magic Order’ are the reason we sleep safely in our beds. Described by Millar as “The Sopranos meets Harry Potter”, the story follows five families of magicians, sworn to protect our world for generations, who must battle an enemy that is picking them off one by one. By day they live among us as our neighbours, friends and co-workers, but by night they are the sorcerers, magicians and wizards that protect us from the forces of darkness… unless the darkness gets them first.

The series will be exec produced by ‘Aquaman’s James Wan, alongside Lindsey Beer (‘Chaos Walking’, ‘Sierra Burgess is a Loser’). Beer will write the series and serve as showrunner, whilst Wan will direct the first episode. Michael Clear (‘MacGyver’, ‘Swamp Thing’) also exec produces with Rob Hackett (‘Swamp Thing’) as co-executive producer overseeing for Wan’s production company, Atomic Monster.

James Wan has recently had huge success directing DC’s ‘Aquaman’, and is signed up to direct the sequel, due for release in 2022. His production company Atomic Monster are also no stranger to comic book adaptations, having recently completed work on ‘Swamp Thing’ for DC Universe.

Lindsey Beer wrote the Netflix movie ‘Sierra Burgess is a Loser’ starring ‘Stranger Things’ Barb, aka Shannon Purser. She is also writing the new ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ reboot, alongside a new ‘Short Circuit’ film, and an adaptation of Mark Millar’s ‘Empress’.

‘The Magic Order’ was the first comic book created by Mark Millar following the sale of his company Millarworld to Netflix back in 2017, with the initial 6 issue run being released from June 2018 to February 2019. The commission as a tv show means it joins ‘Jupiter’s Legacy’ and ‘American Jesus’, which are both in the works as tv series, alongside film adaptations of ‘Empress’, ‘Huck’ and ‘Sharkey The Bounty Hunter’.

Netflix hasn’t given a release date for The Magic Order‘ Season 1, but we wouldn’t expect it before, at least, 2020. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
