CBS has just released a little teaser trailer for the upcoming Star Trek: Picard series, which will premiere on Amazon Prime later this year in the UK.

The new Star Trek series features Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his role as the venerable Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on ‘Star Trek: Next Generation’. The series will follow this iconic character in the next chapter of his life.

The plot details for the new series are thin on the ground right now. However, we do know it is set after the events of ‘Nemesis’, and the 2009 ‘Star Trek’ movie, which saw original Spock/Spock Prime (Leonard Nimoy), trying to save the Romulan homeworld of Romulus from a Supernova using Red Matter. Spock ultimately fails, and Romulus explodes. This cataclysmic event and the dissolution of the Romulan Empire has “radically altered” the life of Picard according to show creator Alex Kurtzman, and altered the balance of power in the galaxy. The new show will be the first time we’ve seen anything canon set in the “Prime” universe timeline post the destruction of Romulus.

As you can hear in the trailer, that appears to be the voice of one of those Romulans saved by Picard during the destruction of Romulus. Admiral Picard has seemingly left Starfleet, and is at his vineyard producing his Chateau Picard wine… Although it seems unlikely he will remain there, as that wouldn’t make for a very interesting drama!

Alongside Stewart, the series will also star Alison Pill (‘The Newsroom’), Harry Treadaway (‘Penny Dreadful’), Isa Briones (‘American Crime Story: Versace’), Santiago Cabrera (‘Salvation’), Evan Evagora, and Michelle Hurd (‘Blindspot’).

The series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Kurtzman, Michael Chabon (‘John Carter’), Akiva Goldsman (‘A Beautiful Mind’), James Duff (‘The Closer’), Stewart, Heather Kadin (‘Salvation’), Rod Roddenberry (‘Earth: Final Conflict’) and Trevor Roth (‘Star Trek: Discovery’) will serve as executive producers and Aaron Baiers (‘Secret Hideout’) will serve as co-executive producer and Kirsten Beyer (‘Star Trek: Discovery’) will serve as supervising producer.

Star Trek: Picard‘ is currently in production, with a view to launching on CBS All Access later in 2019. It will then premiere in more than 200 countries and territories, including the UK and Ireland within 24hrs of the USA.
