Netflix Releases First Photo Of ‘13 Reasons Why’s Katherine Langford In Frank Miller & Tom Wheeler’s Arthurian Series ‘Cursed’
Netflix has released a “first look” photo of ’13 Reasons Why’ star Katherine Langford as the kick-ass future Lady of the Lake, in Frank Miller & Tom Wheeler’s upcoming Arthurian series ‘Cursed’.
Based on the upcoming book of the same name, ‘Cursed’ is a re-imagining of the Arthurian legend, told through the eyes of Nimue (Langford), a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake. After her mother’s death, she finds an unexpected partner in Arthur, a young mercenary, in a quest to find Merlin and deliver an ancient sword. Over the course of her journey, Nimue will become a symbol of courage and rebellion against the terrifying Red Paladins, and their complicit King Uther.
As you can probably tell from the description, this is the story of Arthur, but not as you know it. “I have always been entranced by the mythological Arthur story – and by Nimue, in particular,” commented Miller when the project was originally announced. “It can be interpreted in any number of ways – from a delightful children’s story, as in ‘The Sword in the Stone’, to a terrifying interpretation like ‘Excalibur’.”
In the photo, we see Langford as Nimue… holding a sword… stood in a lake. Foreshadowing much?
Australian actress Langford landed a Golden Globe nomination for her role as Hannah Baker, the ill-fated driving force behind the first two seasons of teen drama ‘13 Reasons Why’. She has since popped up in Netflix series ‘Love, Simon’, and also lent her voice to the ‘Robot Chicken’ cast. She recently completed filming on Rian Johnson’s ‘Knives Out’ with Chris Evans and Daniel Craig, and ‘Spontaneous’ with Piper Perabo and Charlie Plummer.
Zetna Fuentes (‘Jane the Virgin’, ‘Jessica Jones’) will kick off the 10-episode run as director and exec produce, alongside Miller and Wheeler. Wheeler is serving as writer and showrunner for the series.
Along with the Netflix series, Wheeler is penning a YA companion novel, for which Miller will supply the illustrations. Frank Miller is the acclaimed comic book artist & writer behind graphic novels such as ‘The Dark Knight Returns’, ‘Sin City’, and ‘300’. Tom Wheeler is the writer/producer behind films such as ‘Puss in Boots’, ‘The Lego Ninjago Movie’ and tv series ‘The Cape’. This is one of those extremely rare occurrences when the people behind the book are not only writing the screen adaptation but are actually writing both projects at the same time.
The ‘Cursed‘ book from publishers Simon & Schuster is due our in Autumn 2019, with the tv series arriving on Netflix in 2020.
