Netflix To Adapt ‘Tom Clancy’s The Division’ Video Game Into Movie Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain

Tom Clancy’s name and work are popular in both the movie world and video games, but now the two will clash together, as Netflix announced they will be bringing a film version of ‘The Division’ to the streaming service.

Based on Ubisoft’s best-selling Tom Clancy video game, the film is set in the near future, where a pandemic virus is spread via paper money on Black Friday, decimating the city of New York and killing millions. By Christmas, what’s left of society has descended into chaos. A group of civilians, trained to operate in catastrophic times, are activated in an attempt to save who and what remains.

What makes this rather more interesting than your average video game to movie adaptation is the cast, which sees Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain take the lead roles. Gyllenhaal is no stranger to game/movie adaptations, having starred in the… shall we say “less than successful”… ‘Prince Of Persia’ movie. You would think he would want to be pretty sure another game-to-movie adaptation would work before signing on, so the fact that he has is probably a good sign. You can see Gyllenhaal pop up next as Mysterio in ‘Spider-Man: Far from Home’. Chastain has starred in multi-award winning movies such as ‘The Martian’, ‘Interstellar’ and ‘Zero Dark Thirty’... You can currently see her as Vuk in ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’

The movie is being written by Rafe Judkins, whose previous work includes ‘Agents Of SHIELD’, ‘Chuck’, and is also writing and showrunning the upcoming Amazon fantasy drama Based On ‘The Wheel of Time’ novels. ‘Deadpool 2’ director David Leitch is set to be behind the camera, whose work you can next see on ‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw’. 87North Productions, Nine Stories, Freckle Films and Ubisoft Film and Television will produce.

‘The Division’ game was launched in 2016 and quickly became the fastest-selling new IP in video game history and currently has more than 20 million players. The follow-up, ‘Tom Clancy’s The Division 2’, was released in March 2019 and was the UK’s best-selling game the week it was released.
