Trailer Lands For ‘The Banana Splits Movie’… And It Is Not The Nostalgic Trip You Think It Would Be…
Hollywood is often accused of “ruining your childhood” by remaking something beloved… badly… and destroying your fond memories of said tv show or film. Usually, it’s a mistake. Something dreamt up by an exec as a cash grab based on a license… In the case of ‘The Banana Splits Movie’, Syfy has actively gone out of its way to make sure any joyful memories you had of the psychedelic ’70s furry anthropomorphic animal characters are utterly destroyed.
For those of you too young to remember, ‘The Banana Splits Adventure Hour’ was a variety show hosted by Fleagle the Beagle, Drooper the Lion, Snorky the Elephant, and Bingo the Gorilla. The show was a mix of live-action and animation, which followed the anthropomorphic furries as they played together in a bubblegum rock band. The original series only ran for 31 episodes in the late ’60s to early ’70s, although most people in the UK probably caught it on Saturday morning kids tv reruns in the ’70s and ’80s.
The film sees the return of Fleagle, Drooper, Snorky, and Bingo… and they’ve come back to kill! A boy named Harley, along with his brother Austin, mother Beth, and father Mitch, all attend a taping of The Banana Splits TV show, which is supposed to be a fun-filled birthday for young Harley and business as usual for Rebecca, the producer of the series. But when the show is threatened to be cancelled, things take an unexpected turn – and the body count quickly rises. Can Harley, his mom and their new pals safely escape?
Finlay Wojtak-Hissong (‘The Kindness Of Strangers’) stars as Harley, with Dani Kind (‘Wynonna Earp’) as his mother Beth, Romeo Carere (‘Don’t Talk to Irene’) as the brother Austin, and Steve Lund (‘Bitten’) as father Mitch. Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper, and Snorky star as The Banana Splits… no seriously… look up the casting, the actors in the suits aren’t even listed. They do list voice actors for some of the Splits, although that will only serve to corrupt your childhood even further… The voice of Fleegle is Bill Farmer, who is the current voice of beloved Disney character Goofy, and Drooper is voiced by Carlos Alazraqui, who was Crocker in ‘The Fairly OddParents’…
The movie is directed by Danishka Esterhazy (‘Level 16’) and written by the warped minds of Jed Elinoff & Scott Thomas, whose previous work includes Netflix’s teen lifeguard comedy ‘Malibu Rescue’, Disney’s ‘Raven’s Home’, ‘Scooby Doo’… and ‘R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour’… So it would seem they looked at their past work and thought “what if we take something really wholesome, and ram some horror into it?”
Should you wish to have your childhood ruined ‘The Banana Splits Movie’ will air in the US on Syfy later this year followed by a home digital release. We’ll let you know when we hear about a UK broadcast.
