CBS has released a poster for the upcoming ‘Star Trek: Picard‘ series, which will air on Amazon Prime in the UK, and it not only features Sir Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard, but it seems he has gained a new doggy companion in his latter years.
‘Star Trek: Picard’ sees Sir Patrick Stewart reprising his iconic role as Jean-Luc Picard, which he played for seven seasons on “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” The new series will follow this iconic character into the next chapter of his life.
The plot details for the new series are thin on the ground right now. However, we do know it is set after the events of ‘Nemesis’, and the 2009 ‘Star Trek’ movie, which saw original Spock/Spock Prime (Leonard Nimoy), trying to save the Romulan homeworld of Romulus from a Supernova using Red Matter. Spock ultimately fails, and Romulus explodes. This cataclysmic event and the dissolution of the Romulan Empire has “radically altered” the life of Picard according to show creator Alex Kurtzman, and altered the balance of power in the galaxy. The new show will be the first time we’ve seen anything canon set in the “Prime” universe timeline post the destruction of Romulus.
Alongside Stewart, the series will also star Alison Pill (‘The Newsroom’), Harry Treadaway (‘Penny Dreadful’), Isa Briones (‘American Crime Story: Versace’), Santiago Cabrera (‘Salvation’), Evan Evagora, and Michelle Hurd (‘Blindspot’).
As you can see in the poster below, it seems Jean-Luc has acquired a canine companion in his retirement. Cue lots of internet speculation as to the name of the dog. There is some online suggestion that he is called “Number One”, although I do hope he went all the way, and just called him Riker… We are due to find out more about the series when they present their ‘Enter the Star Trek Universe’ panel at Comic-Con International: San Diego (SDCC) on Saturday, 20th July. We do know actor/director Jonathan Frakes will be directing a number of the episodes of the series, so I’m sure there have been some interesting conversations about the doggie’s name if it is called “Number One”…
The series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Kurtzman, Michael Chabon (‘John Carter’), Akiva Goldsman (‘A Beautiful Mind’), James Duff (‘The Closer’), Stewart, Heather Kadin (‘Salvation’), Rod Roddenberry (‘Earth: Final Conflict’) and Trevor Roth (‘Star Trek: Discovery’) will serve as executive producers and Aaron Baiers (‘Secret Hideout’) will serve as co-executive producer and Kirsten Beyer (‘Star Trek: Discovery’) will serve as supervising producer.
‘Star Trek: Picard‘ will launch on CBS All Access later in 2019. It will then premiere in more than 200 countries and territories, including the UK and Ireland within 24hrs of the USA.
