Zack Snyder & Jay Oliva To Create Norse Mythology Anime Series For Netflix

For those of you wondering what project Zack Snyder might tackle next, I’m not sure this would have popped up at the top of anyone’s list, but it sounds rather amazing! The ‘Watchmen’ & ‘Man of Steel’ director has teamed up with DC animation director Jay Oliva to create an all-new anime series set in the world of Norse mythology.

“Zack Snyder’s innovation in visual storytelling has pushed the industry forward and established him as one of the most distinctive filmmakers of his generation,” commented John Derderian, head of Anime programming for Netflix. We are beyond excited to partner with him and his exceptional team to bring the iconic characters and stories of Norse mythology to life in his inimitable style.”

Oliva (‘Trese’, ‘Batman The Dark Knight Returns’, ‘Justice League The Flashpoint Paradox’) is creating the series alongside Snyder and will serve as the showrunner, director, and executive producer. Oliva and Snyder have had a longstanding creative partnership, spanning over a dozen live-action feature films, including ‘Justice League’, ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’, ‘300: Rise of an Empire’, and ‘Man of Steel’.

Snyder is currently directing, writing, and producing the zombie thriller feature film ‘Army of the Dead’ for Netflix. His name is also popping up all over social media recently as his fans try to get WB to #releasethesnydercut of ‘Justice League’, the film he left for personal reasons, leaving it in the hands of Joss Whedon. Many were not happy with the result, and want to see the “Snyder Cut” of the movie. Oliva is currently in production on the Manila-set Netflix original anime series ‘Trese’.

Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller will produce the new Norse mythology series alongside Snyder through Stone Quarry Animation, their production company’s newest venture with Oliva.

Netflix is building up quite a stable of original and imported anime at the moment. The streamer is currently the international home to ‘ULTRAMAN’, ‘Aggretsuko’, ‘Castlevania’, ‘Devilman Crybaby’, ‘GODZILLA: The Planet Eater’, ‘BAKI’, ‘Violet Evergarden’, ‘B: The Beginning’, and ‘The Seven Deadly Sins’. In the last year, Netflix has also announced several upcoming anime titles based on global IP, including Magic: The Gathering, ‘Pacific Rim’, ‘Altered Carbon’, ‘Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045’, and ‘Transformers: War for Cybertron’, all of which are currently in development. New anime series ‘Cannon Busters’, ‘Seis Manos’, and ‘Levius‘ will all launch later this year.
