Netflix has renewed comedy-drama ‘Dear White People‘ for a 4th and final Season the streaming service announced last night.
Based on Justin Simien’s acclaimed indie film, the show is set against the backdrop of a predominantly white Ivy League university where racial tensions bubble just below the surface, ‘Dear White People’ satirises “post-racial” America and weaves together the universal story of finding one’s own identity and forging a wholly unique path.
Season 1 of the show picked up where the 2014 film left off and followed a group of Winchester University’s students of colour as they navigate a diverse landscape of social injustice, cultural bias, political correctness (or lack thereof) and sometimes misguided activism in the millennial age. Seasons 2 and 3 continued their journey as it looked at cultural appropriation, sex and gender norms, racist bots, conspiracy theories, Jesus, weed, The Sunken Place and way more.
“I’m so grateful my little indie-that-could has made it to four seasons at Netflix,” commented Simien. “This show, along with the many talented storytellers it has brought into my orbit, has changed my life and I can’t wait to create a celebratory final volume befitting such a transformative experience.”
Through an absurdist lens, ‘Dear White People’ utilises biting irony, self-deprecation and sometimes brutal honesty to hold up a mirror to the issues plaguing society today, all the while leading with laughter.
The renewal announcement came via social media, which saw the cast get together on a call to tell everyone about the renewal. You can see the tweet below:
