HBO Max Lines Up Cast For ‘Gossip Girl’ Reboot/Continuation

HBO Max has lined up five cast members for its upcoming reboot/continuation of Gossip Girl including Emily Alyn Lind (‘Code Black’), Whitney Peak (‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’), Eli Brown (‘Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists’), Johnathan Fernandez (‘Lethal Weapon’) and Jason Gotay (‘Peter Pan Live!’).

The original ‘Gossip Girl’ was created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, based on the books by Cecily von Ziegesar. The story revolved around a group of privileged teens living on the Upper East Side of New York, who could hide no secret from the omniscient blogger, “Gossip Girl”, who was always watching.

The new 10-episode series is set eight years after the original website went dark, as a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of “Gossip Girl”. The prestige series will address just how much social media – and the landscape of New York itself – has changed in the intervening years.

At the moment, the only character description we have is for Audrey, played by Emily Alyn Lind, and that is pretty brief – Audrey has been in a long term relationship and is beginning to wonder what more could be out there. Lind most recently co-starred on the Facebook Watch series ‘Sacred Lies’, and previously appeared on ‘Code Black’ and ‘Revenge’. We do know that Lind’s Audrey, along with the characters played by Whitney Peak and Eli Brown will be the leading trio, with Johnathan Fernandez and Jason Gotay making up part of the core cast. The original series’ Kristen Bell also returns as the narrator.

Whitney Peak is probably best known for her recurring role as Judith in ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’, but has also popped up in the movie ‘Mollys Game’. Eli Brown as a series regular in PLL spin-off ‘Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists’ and appeared in Netflix series ‘Spinning Out’. Johnathan Fernandez is probably best known for his role as medical examiner Bernard Scorsese in ‘Lethal Weapon’, whilst Jason Gotay is primarily known for his work on Broadway where he appeared in ‘Evita’, ‘Bring It On’ and ‘Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark’.

Creator of ‘Quantico’ Joshua Safran, who was also showrunner and writer on the original ‘Gossip Girl’, takes the lead on this new version alongside Schwartz & Savage’s Fake Empire, Alloy Entertainment, WBTV and CBS Television Studios. Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo exec produce for Alloy, with Lis Rowinski from Fake Empire as co-executive producer.

The original series ran for 6 seasons from 2007 to 2012 on The CW, and made huge stars out of the cast, which included Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick. Whilst the set up for this new version will focus on a new cast, it is still set in the same timeline as the original, so it could be possible they may rope in some of the old faces for guest appearances.

The new Gossip Girl series will air on HBO Max in the USA. Unfortunately, whilst Sky does have an overall carriage deal to broadcast HBO’s shows, that does not include the HBO Max series, so that means there is no UK broadcaster at the moment. We’ll let you know if that changes.
