HBO Working On A ‘Hellraiser’ Series With ‘Halloween’s David Gordon Green Set To Direct
HBO is developing a series based on the horror franchise ‘Hellraiser’ it has been announced, with ‘Halloween’s David Gordon Green set to direct the first few episodes.
For those of you unfamiliar with the franchise, it focused on a puzzle box that opens a gateway to the Hell-like realm of the Cenobites, an order of formerly human monsters who harvest human souls to torture in sadistic experiments. This new version is not a reboot, but a continuation of the story based on the past mythology of the various films and books, according to Deadline who broke the news.
The series is, of course, expected to feature Pinhead, leader of the Cenobites and the central antagonist of the movies, who lives in an extra-dimensional realm activated through the “Lament Configuration” puzzle box. The Cenobites come from hell to harvest human souls and keep a balance between good and evil.
The series will be written by Mark Verheiden (‘Battlestar Galactica’, ‘Daredevil’, ‘Heroes’), and Michael Dougherty (‘X-Men United’, ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’, ‘Trick r’ Treat’), with David Gordon Green (‘Halloween’ franchise) set to direct the pilot and a number of other episodes. All three exec produce along with Dan Farah of Farah Films, Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment, Eric Gardner of Panacea Entertainment, Lawrence Kuppin and David Salzman. Danny McBride, Jody Hill and Brandon James, Green’s partners from Rough House Pictures, also exec produce.
You may also have heard that Spyglass is developing a ‘Hellraiser’ movie reboot written and co-produced by David S. Goyer. This is apparently still happening at the moment but will be completely separate to the new tv series.
No news yet on when the ‘Hellraiser’ series may land on HBO, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
