Netflix Revives Critically Acclaimed Danish Political Drama ‘Borgen’ For A 4th Season

Netflix has struck a deal with DR, the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, to revive the critically acclaimed political drama Borgen for a 4th Season the streaming service has announced.

The drama originally launched in 2010 starring Sidse Babett Knudsen and Birgitte Hjort Sørensen and was written by Adam Price. It followed the story of Birgitte Nyborg, a minor centrist politician, who becomes the first female Prime Minister of Denmark against all the odds.

The new ‘Borgen’, will again follow Birgitte Nyborg (Knudsen), her staff and the media tasked with covering her, this time in her role as Foreign Minister. The show will also follow Katrine Fønsmark’s (Sørensen) journey. After being Birgitte’s head of press for a while, she is back in journalism where she has landed a job as news director for a large, nationwide television station.

The series will premiere on DR before becoming available on Netflix around the world, reunites the creative team and talent behind the Peabody and BAFTA award-winning series. That includes creator Adam Price and lead actresses Sidse Babett Knudsen as Birgitte Nyborg and Birgitte Hjort Sørensen as Katrine Fønsmark.

We look forward to revisiting the universe and the characters to tell a current and highly topical story about a hot political topic with international implications.’’

‘Borgen’ season 1-3 was sold to more than 80 countries globally and won several prizes like the BAFTA Award (Best International), 2012, Peabody Award, 2014, Prix Italia Award (Best TV Drama), 2010, Fipa d’Or Grand Prize (Best Drama Series), 2011 and Golden Nymph Award (Best European Drama Series), 2013.

Borgen will be produced by SAM Productions, a Danish screenwriter-based production company, and is written by Adam Price (‘Borgen’, ‘Ragnarok’). The executive producer is Meta Louise Foldager Sørensen (‘Antichrist’, ‘Melancholia’) and the producer is Stine Meldgaard Madsen (‘Ragnarok’, ‘Something’s Rockin’’).

Borgen‘ will premiere on DR in Denmark then Netflix worldwide in 2022… so a bit of a wait!
