Netflix Renews ‘The Last Kingdom’ For Season 5

Netflix has ordered a 5th Season of Saxon drama The Last Kingdom it has been announced.

Based on Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories novel series, ‘The Last Kingdom’ follows young warrior and outsider, Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), on a fierce mission to reclaim his birthright. The series combines real historical figures and events with fictional characters before and after the reign of Alfred the Great, who as King of Wessex fought off a Viking invasion.

In the 4th Season, after the death of Alfred, the alliances between the kingdoms were fractured. The new King, Edward (Timothy Innes), was intent on isolating Wessex and strengthening his reinforcements against possible Dane incursions, while Lord Aethelred of Mercia (Toby Regbo) made ambitious plans to establish himself as a rival to Wessex. Northumbria was also facing hostility, leading Uhtred to believe the timing is right to challenge his uncle Aelfric (Joseph Millson) to take back his ancestral home, Bebbanburg. But fate shifted in a different direction; news comes that Mercia is in turmoil, and Uhtred’s affection for Aethelflaed (Millie Brady) drove him back into the politics that threaten to break out into war. Just as it seems that peace could be found between the Saxons, a new and unprecedented Dane enemy took them by surprise. Uhtred began to realise that his destiny was tied to Alfred’s dream and he became determined to resolve Saxon struggles before the possibility of England slipped from their grasp forever.

As we head into Season 5, which is based on Cornwell’s novels “The Warriors of the Storm” and “The Flame Bearer”, Uhtred is charged with training King Edward’s first-born son Aethelstan as a warrior, but his ambition will have an even higher purpose. However, to achieve this destiny, Uhtred will have to face down his greatest enemy and suffer his greatest loss.

“We are really proud of The Last Kingdom, which continues to entertain audiences all over the world,” commented Executive producer Nigel Marchant. “We had such a tremendous response to the last season, so are thrilled to be bringing it back for season five on Netflix.”

Seasons 1 to 4 of ‘The Last Kingdom‘ can be found on Netflix UK.
