ITV Renews ‘Grantchester’ For Season 6

ITV has renewed Grantchester‘ for a 6th Season it has been announced, which will see Tom Brittney (‘The Five’, ‘Outlander’) return as the parish priest Will Davenport, alongside Robson Green as DI Geordie Keating, the other half of the unlikely 1950s crime-fighting duo. Green and Brittney made the announcement during an Instagram video interview with Masterpiece PBS, who air the series in the US, earlier today (see below).

Season 5 picked up in Cambridge in 1957, a year after the fourth season in which Prime Minister Harold MacMillan told the British people that they had “never had it so good.” For many of the residents of Grantchester, it really felt like they’re in a delightful new Eden, but for all the talk of paradise on earth and faith-in-action, Geordie knew that trouble was never far away…

According to the Green in the interview, the show is planning on trying to start filming again around September, although that will rather depend on working around the pandemic. “I think it’s going be strange, I just hope the scripts aren’t dictated too much by something beyond our control but I’m sure they will be,” he commented.

“It’s looking good, Grantchester could be one of the first things filming,” added Brittney. Unlike some modern dramas who may find ways to add the pandemic into the storyline, that isn’t really possible for Grantchester. “You can’t write COVID into the 1950s,” he rightly points out.

The series is Executive Produced for Kudos by Emma Kingsman-Lloyd and by writer/creator Daisy Coulam. The Executive Producer for Masterpiece is Rebecca Eaton at WGBH Boston. Series 5 is produced by Richard Cookson and directed by Gordon Anderson, Christiana Ebohon-Green and Rob Evans. Adapted from the Grantchester Mysteries novels by James Runcie, the series was developed for television by Daisy Coulam and written by Daisy Coulam and John Jackson, Carey Andrews, Jake Riddell and Joshua St Johnston.

We don’t yet have a premiere date for Grantchester‘ Season 6, but given the plan is to shoot from September to January, it’s not going to air until 2021. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
