Amazon Orders Adaption Of Brian K. Vaughan/Cliff Chiang ‘Paper Girls’ Graphic Novel To Series

Amazon has given a series order to an adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s best-selling graphic novel Paper Girls, it has been announced. The drama had previously been announced in development at the streaming service back in July 2019.

For those of you unfamiliar with the book, it tells the story of four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls, who, in the early hours after Halloween of 1988, uncover the most important story of all time, when the town is struck by an invasion from a mysterious force from the future. Erin, Mac, KJ, and Tiffany soon find themselves unwillingly caught in a conflict between two warring factions of time-travellers. As they travel between our present, the past, and the future – they encounter future versions of themselves and now must choose to embrace or reject their fate.

The adaptation has been written by ‘Toy Story 4’ co-writer Stephany Folsom, based on the graphic novel by Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang. She will also serve as showrunner alongside Christopher Cantwell & Christopher C. Rogers, the writers, creators and showrunners of Amazon’s ‘Halt and Catch Fire’. The trio exec produce alongside Vaughan and Chiang, with Legendary Television and Brad Pitt’s Plan B (’12 Years A Slave’, ‘Moonlight’) serving as production companies.

“As huge fans of what Brian and Cliff created in Paper Girls, we couldn’t be more excited by the opportunity to bring this incredible adventure to life,” commented Folsom, Cantwell and Rogers in a statement. “This is a story with so much heart, and so many unique colours and dimensions – our sincere hope is not only to do justice to the source material but to make Paper Girls unlike anything else currently on TV.”

Brian K. Vaughan has done rather well with tv adaptions. He was the creator of the original comic book for ‘Marvel’s Runaways’ which ran for three seasons on Hulu, and ‘Y: The Last Man’, which is currently being adapted into a tv series by FX. He is also the creator of the epic space opera/fantasy comic book ‘Saga’, which I would personally love to see someone attempt to adapt as a tv series, but no one has yet had the guts to tackle it… and if you’ve read it, you’ll probably understand why!

“We love bringing Paper Girls to our global Amazon Prime Video audience as an original series,” adds Albert Cheng, COO and Co-Head of Television, Amazon Studios. “Brian’s beloved, widely acclaimed and multiple Eisner Award-winning story delivers a gripping concept grounded by compelling characters. We have a great partnership with Legendary and Plan B, and the perfect creative team of Stephany, Christopher, and Christopher, to bring Brian and Cliff’s graphic novels to life.”

No news yet on when Paper Girls‘ Season 1 will premiere on Amazon Prime (although it won’t be until at least 2021), but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
