Netflix Releases “Sneak Peek” Of ‘The Crown’ Season 4 Alongside November Premiere Date!

by Dave Elliott

Netflix has released a little “sneak peek” at the upcoming 4th Season of royal drama The Crown, along with revealing a November premiere date.

‘The Crown’ tells the inside story of two of the most famous addresses in the world – Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street – and the intrigues, love lives and machinations behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th century. The most third season saw Olivia Colman take over the role of Queen, as she faces a rapidly changing Britain, whilst her family continues to struggle against the needs of the monarchy and the wants of their fracturing personal lives. The season ended in 1977 with the Queens Silver Jubilee.

The upcoming 4th Season will be the last outing for the current cast before they are switched out for a new, more age-appropriate group of actors for seasons 5 & 6. Olivia Colman returns as HRH Queen Elizabeth II, alongside Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, Helena Bonham Carter as HRH Princess Margaret, Josh O’Connor as Charles, Prince of Wales, and Erin Doherty as Princess Anne. Joining them this season are Gillian Anderson (‘X-Files’, ‘The Fall’) who will take on the role of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, and Emma Corrin (‘Pennyworth’, ‘Grantchester’) who plays Lady Diana Spencer.

Whilst we don’t know exactly what time period this season will cover, we do know it will certainly feature the earlier part of Thatcher’s reign over the UK which began in 1979, along with the wedding of Charles and Diana which occurred in 1981. Another key event, which could kick off the series, is the assassination of Earl Mountbatten (Charles Dance) which also happened in 1979. Each previous season has covered around 10 years, which means it could take us up to Thatcher’s downfall in 1990, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Once Season 4 has aired, the show will go on hiatus for a year as the cast changes for the last two seasons, bringing in Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana. Season 5 will premiere in 2022, with the 6th and final season airing in 2023.

The Crown‘ Season 4 premieres Sunday, 15th November 2020 on Netflix UK and worldwide.
