I know Hollywood has a habit of remaking older properties, but this one has an eyebrow-raising turnaround, as it’s reported ‘Pretty Little Liars’ is up for a reboot, only a few years after the original series ended.

The potential reboot comes from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the creator of shows such as ‘Riverdale’ and ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’. Aguirre-Sacasa would write the pilot of the teen drama, which is said to have an entirely new cast and a new story.

The original ‘Pretty Little Liars’ came from creator & showrunner I. Marlene King, based on the books by Sara Shepard, and ran from 2010-2016. The drama followed the lives of four high school girls who, one year after the disappearance of their friend, begin receiving messages from a mysterious figure, known only as “A”, who threatens to expose their deepest secrets. The show ran for seven seasons and was a massive hit of US network Freeform, launching the careers of actors such as Lucy Hale, Tyler Blackburn, Troian Bellisario, Shay Mitchell and Tyler Blackburn.

This is not the first time there has been an attempt to continue the PPL brand. The first spin-off, ‘Ravenswood’, launched in 2013, but was cancelled after one season due to low ratings. The second spin-off, ‘Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists’, launched in 2019… only to also be cancelled after one season.

Aguirre-Sacasa, who is also Chief Creative Officer of Archie Comics, has not been having the best year (I mean… not that 2020 has been that great for anyone…). ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ is set to end at Netflix with the final “Part 4” airing later this year on the streaming service; ‘Katy Keene’, which he co-developed with Michael Grassi, was cancelled by The CW after one season; And Dracula inspired pilot ‘The Brides’, which he developed for ABC was not picked up to series.

On the plus side, the increasingly ridiculous ‘Riverdale’ is set to return to The CW for a 5th Season in 2021, and his gothic drama, ‘The Shelley Society’, which is a sort of Victorian X-Files based around a young Mary Shelley, has been picked up to series by HBO Max.

Currently, the new potential ‘Pretty Little Liars’ does not yet have a broadcaster and has not yet been pitched to networks or streaming services. Whilst Freeform did air the original drama, Aguirre-Sacasa is under an overall deal at WB. It is possible Freeform could still make a bid for it, although it would be more expensive for them coming from an outside studio. According to THR, who first reported the story, WarnerMedia’s HBO Max seems a more likely destination, but we’ll let you know if we hear more.
