Zack Snyder’s Upcoming Zombie/Action/Heist Film ‘Army of the Dead’ Already Has Prequel & Anime Series In The Works At Netflix!

Zack Snyder is returning to the world of zombies in a big way! Not only does he have ‘Army of the Dead’ incoming – a heist movie which happens to take place in the middle of a zombie apocalypse – but the film already has a prequel ordered, and an anime series, all for Netflix!

The main ‘Army of the Dead’ movie is set following a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas. A group of mercenaries decide to take the ultimate gamble… venturing into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted!

The film stars Dave Bautista (‘Guardians of the Galaxy’), Ella Purnell (‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’, ‘Sweetbitter’), Ana De La Reguera (‘Everything, Everything’, ‘Goliath’), Theo Rossi (‘Luke Cage’, ‘Sons of Anarchy’), Matthias Schweighöfer (‘You Are Wanted’), Huma Qureshi (‘Kaala’, ‘Viceroy’s House’, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, ‘Badlapur’), Omari Hardwick (‘Power’), Tig Notaro (‘Star Trek: Discovery’, ‘Transparent’), Hiroyuki Sanada (‘Westworld’, ‘The Last Ship’), Garret Dillahunt (‘Fear the Walking Dead’, ‘The Gifted’), Raúl Castillo (‘Atypical’, ‘Vida’), Nora Arnezeder (‘Riviera’, ‘ZOO’), and Samantha Win (‘Mortal Kombat: Legacy’).

It’s now been announced that Shay Hatten (‘John Wick: Chapter 3 & 4’), one of the writers of the screenplay for ‘Army of the Dead’, will write a prequel as well as an anime series, turning the movie into a larger zombie universe.

“I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to partner with Netflix again as we expand the Army of the Dead universe with both an international prequel, as well as exploring the visually dynamic world of animation,” commented Snyder. “It’s been a great collaboration and we are thrilled that Netflix sees this as big of an IP as we do.”

Although Snyder co-wrote and directed the first film he will hand over the reins to actor/director Matthias Schweighöfer for the prequel, which will follow Schweighöfer’s ‘Army of the Dead’ character, Ludwig Dieter. Snyder will produce alongside Deborah Snyder and Wesley Coller of The Stone Quarry, with Schweighöfer and Dan Maag producing for PANTALEON Films.

“It has already been a great pleasure to be part of this wonderful ensemble around Zack Synder – a fascinating project,” adds Schweighöfer. “I am happy that it is now being developed on so many different levels.”

Along with writing/directing ‘Army of the Dead’, Snyder himself has, of course, been working on the upcoming #Snydercut of ‘Justice League’, which is due to be released in 2021. He is also working on a feature adaptation of Ayn Rand’s 1943 novel ‘The Fountainhead’ about a young architect battling for his own artistic integrity. This foray into the world of zombies is something of a homecoming for the director, who made his feature film debut with a remake of George A. Romero’s ‘Dawn of the Dead’ in 2004.

‘Army of the Dead’ is set to premiere in 2021 on Netflix UK and worldwide.
