CW Reveals New ‘Batwoman’ Suit & HBO Max Reveals ‘Titans’ Red Hood

It seems the Bat-Family have been out on a shopping spree, as The CW releases the first image of new Batwoman Javicia Leslie in her new batsuit, whilst over on HBO Max, they have dropped the first image of Red Hood in Titans Season 3.

As you probably know by now, ‘Batwoman’ Season 2 will have a new face under the cowl after Ruby Rose decided not to continue the role after the first season. Rather than recast, Javicia Leslie will play new character, Ryan Wilder, who is described as likeable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.

A new Batwoman needs a new suit, and The CW has released two images so you can get a good detailed look (click to enlarge).

As you can see, the new outfit has a couple of interesting changes, most noticeably, the hair seems to be her natural colour with some red highlights, rather than a (let’s be honest… slightly dubious) wig. The boots are also shorter, and she has some snazzy new gauntlets too.

“Ryan’s journey starts from a place of ‘What can this Batsuit do for me?’ But it’s not long before she realizes the power of its symbol and what it can do for everyone else in Gotham City,” commented exec producer Caroline Dries. “As Ryan embraces everything that makes her special, she adjusts the suit to fit her physically and figuratively. This meant creating a new body design and new cowl that was undeniably a statement that screamed ‘powerful.’ Maya Mani sent me her drawings and I loved it. The wig was something we never perfected in season one, and Janice Workman crushed it with this new take. Javicia and I saw various prototypes of styles and red ombres, and at one point we were trading our own iPad-doodled versions. Janice translated that into what we are looking at now. When I see it, I smile. It makes me feel inspired.”

Batwoman herself, Javicia Leslie, also added “I love the fact that Ryan is becoming her own Batwoman — it’s her style, her swag, and her moment! It was an honour to be able to collaborate with Caroline and Maya. I felt it was important that viewers could tell by the silhouette that Batwoman was a Black girl. With the form-fitting suit and beautiful Afro, we definitely nailed it!”

Over on HBO Max, they also have some costume changes as (spoilers if you don’t know this… but really? Brush up on your Bat-history…) former Robin, Jason Todd (Curran Walters), embraces the role of Red Hood. In the comics, this change came when Todd, who was murdered by The Joker, returns to life (because… comic books…) and discovers Batman has not avenged his “death”. In the TV show, Todd will take on the new identity after the end of Season 2 saw him rejected by the Titans, and becomes obsessed with taking down his old team.

As you can see in the photos/concept art, the outfit they have gone for is pretty much the traditional Red Hood look. Brown jacket, motorbike-style helmet, and tactical gear.

Season 3 has our heroes heading to Gotham City and that will see them reunite with old friends and face new threats… One of those “old friends” was the long-rumoured appearance of Barbara Gordon (to be cast), although it will be a somewhat different version to the one you might have expected. It doesn’t look like we will be seeing her suit up as Batgirl or as the wheelchair-bound genius Oracle. In this universe, Babs has joined the family business as Commissioner Gordon of Gotham City Police Department. She does, however, have a “past” with Brenton Thwaites’s Dick Grayson/Nightwing and is somewhat wary of this new team of heroes that have landed in her city.

On the “threat” side of things, along with Red Hood, the will also be dealing with Dr. Jonathan Crane, aka Scarecrow (also to be cast). He will apparently be an Arkham Asylum inmate who offers his services as a profiler and consultant for the GCPD… I’m sure that’ll end well…

Batwoman is set to return for Season 2 in January 2021 on The CW in the USA… It may or may not appear on E4 (depending on the amount of vodka consumed by the scheduling department) but we’ll let you know when we hear something. Titans‘ Season 3 on HBO Max in the USA and Netflix in the UK, and should air at some point in 2021.
