Amazon Renews ‘Alex Rider’ For Season 2

Amazon has announced that teen spy Alex Rider will return for a 2nd Season on Amazon Prime Video in UK, Australia, Canada, Italy, Germany, Latin America and New Zealand, and IMDb TV, Amazon’s free streaming service, in the USA.

The first season introduced Otto Farrant as Alex Rider, a London based teenager who had unknowingly been trained since childhood for the dangerous world of espionage. Pressured to help investigate his uncle’s death, and how it connects to the assassination of two high-profile billionaires, Alex reluctantly assumed a new identity to go undercover in a remote boarding school called Point Blanc. Isolated far above the snowline in the French Alps, Point Blanc claimed to set the troubled teenage children of the ultra-rich back onto the right track. As Alex dug deeper, he discovered the students were in fact the subjects of a disturbing plan which Alex had to risk his life to stop.

Season 1 was based on Anthony Horowitz’s novel Point Blanc, which is actually the second novel in the book series. Sticking with the tradition of not doing the tv show in the same order as the novels, Season 2 will be based on Eagle Strike, the fourth novel in the best-selling Alex Rider franchise.

“I couldn’t be happier with the response to season one of Alex Rider and I’m thrilled that the adventure is going to continue with Eagle Strike, one of my favourite stories,” commented Horowitz.

The first season of ‘Alex Rider’ launched this summer on Prime Video in the UK, Australia and Germany quickly becoming a hit for the streaming service. On 12th November, Season 1 launches on Prime Video in Italy, then on November 13th on IMDb TV in the US and on Prime Video in Canada and Latin America.

“As US audiences discover the escapist adventure that is Alex Rider season one, there is no better time to confirm the thrilling story will absolutely continue with a second season,” said Lauren Anderson and Ryan Pirozzi, Co-Heads of Content and Programming for IMDb TV. “We are proud that our first Original series since aligning under Amazon Studios features this special character, enviable cast and the dynamic material originated by Anthony and brought to a streaming audience by Guy, Sony and the team at Eleventh Hour.”

The series had a slightly unusual journey to the screen, as it was originally in development with ITV, but they walked away and Sony swooped in to continue developing the show with Eleventh Hour, who optioned the rights. Rather than wait for a broadcaster to get on-board, they decided to make the entire first season, then look for someone to air it afterwards, which is when Amazon picked it up.

As with Alex Rider season one, Anthony Horowitz, the author of the book franchise, will serve as an Executive Producer alongside Jill Green, Eve Gutierrez, and series writer Guy Burt.

“We’re thrilled that audiences in over 100 global territories connected with Alex Rider so enthusiastically since it launched on Amazon Prime Video in the UK this summer,” adds Wayne Garvie, President, International Production, Sony Pictures Television. “Escapism and entertainment have never been more important than they are this year, and I know that what Anthony and the team at Eleventh Hour have planned for Eagle Strike will keep everyone on the edge of their seats.”

Alex Rider‘ Season 1 can be watched right now on Amazon Prime Video in the UK. The series launches November 13, 2020, on IMDb TV in the US and on Prime Video in Canada and Latin America.
