‘The Expanse’ Renewed For 6th & Final Season
‘The Expanse‘ will finish… expanding… as Amazon announce the brilliant sci-fi drama has been renewed for a 6th and final season before the 5th season premieres this December.
Based on the novels by James S. A. Corey, the series is set in a colonised solar system and begins with the governments of Earth, Mars and the Asteroid Belt locked in long-standing conflict. The crew of the Rocinante – an illegally salvaged warship – stumbles on a vast conspiracy and a mysterious alien technology that threatens to upend the balance of power and the fate of humanity.
“From the moment we committed to bringing this show to life up, until this final season, we have worked tirelessly to honour the vision of the writers,” commented Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, co-CEOs and co-founders of Alcon Television Group and executive producers. “We have prided ourselves on having one of the most diverse casts on television and giving a platform to stories that matter. A special thanks to Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, the writers of both the books [under the pen name James S. A. Corey] and series, and to Naren Shankar, the series showrunner and executive producer. It continues to be an honour and privilege to work with this team. We also would like to thank Amazon for their continuing support to help us tell this story in its fullest and to bring The Expanse to a global audience.”
“The dedication and artistry of everyone who helps bring The Expanse to the screen is incredible,” adds showrunner Naren Shankar. “Our fans are awesome, and we cannot wait to get rolling on Season Six!”
The most recent fourth season saw the crew of the Rocinante on a mission from the U.N. to explore new worlds beyond the Ring Gate. Humanity had been given access to thousands of Earth-like planets which has created a land rush and furthered tensions between the opposing nations of Earth, Mars and the Belt. Ilus is the first of these planets, one rich with natural resources but also marked by the ruins of a long-dead alien civilisation. While Earthers, Martians and Belters manoeuvred to colonise Ilus and its natural resources, these early explorers didn’t understand this new world and are unaware of the larger dangers that await them.
Season 5 of picks up as multitudes of humans leave the solar system in search of new homes and vast fortunes on the earth-like worlds beyond the alien Ring, and a heavy price for centuries of exploitation of the Belt finally comes due and a reckoning is at hand. For the crew of the Rocinante and the leaders of the Inner Planets and the Belt, the past and present converge, bringing forth personal challenges that have wide-reaching repercussions throughout the Solar System.
Amos (Wes Chatham) returns to Earth to confront his past and the legacy of the life he fought to leave behind. Naomi (Dominique Tipper) reaches out to her estranged son in a desperate bid to save him from his father’s toxic influence. Bobbie (Frankie Adams) and Alex (Cas Anvar) confront the collapse of Mars as they chase a shadowy cabal with ties to terrorists and criminals. Holden (Steven Strait) wrestles with the consequences of his own past with the Protomolecule, the aliens who built it, and the mystery of what killed them. Drummer (Cara Gee), with a new crew, fights to escape who and what she used to be. And Avasarala (Shohreh Aghdashloo), refusing to be relegated to the sidelines, fights to prevent a terrorist attack unrivalled in history.
The 5th Season will be the last for Cas Anvar, who faced a series of sexual misconduct allegations over the summer, will not be back for the final season. All the other main cast members will return.
‘The Expanse‘ Season 5 premieres Wednesday, 16th December 2020 on Amazon Prime UK and worldwide. Just like ‘The Boys’, the first 3 episodes will drop together, with the new episodes of the 10-episode season landing each following Wednesday.
