Brandon Routh Takes Recurring Role On ‘The Rookie’ Season 3

Brandon Routh is going from superhero to cop, as it’s announced the former ‘Legends Of Tomorrow’ star will appear in a recurring role on Season 3 of The Rookie.

The series stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, the oldest rookie in the LAPD, who has used his life experience, determination and sense of humour to keep up with rookies 20 years his junior. In Season 3, Nolan is nearing the end of his training, but now faces his biggest challenge as a police officer when he must come to terms with the choices he has made in pursuit of the truth.

Routh is set to join the cast as Doug Stanton, an eleven-year veteran of the LAPD, whose views prove to be polarizing at the Mid-Wilshire station. He is currently set to appear in four episodes of the police drama, but they also have the option to extend that to a season-long arc.

Brandon Routh has most recently been starring in ‘Legends Of Tomorrow’ as Ray Palmer, aka The Atom. The character was written out during the 5th Season when the writers decided to wrap up the love story between Ray and Nora Darhk (played by Routh’s real-life wife, Courtney Ford). Prior to that, he had a recurring role on ‘Chuck’, played Todd Ingram in ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’, and, of course, starred as Superman/Clark Kent in the film ‘Superman Returns’.

The 3rd Season of ‘The Rookie’ is currently filming in America under COVID restrictions, although they have hit a few issues. At the end of October, five production crew members testing positive for coronavirus, but they managed to keep filming going without having to shut everything down.

Routh joins the current cast which includes Fillion as John Nolan, Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez, Richard T. Jones as Sergeant Wade Grey, Titus Makin as Jackson West, Melissa O’Neil as Lucy Chen, Mekia Cox as Nyla Harper, and Eric Winter as Tim Bradford.

The show was created by Alexi Hawley, and comes from The Mark Gordon Company (‘Designated Survivor’, ‘Quantico’, ‘Ray Donovan’) and ABC Studios, with Hawley and Fillion exec producing alongside Michelle Chapman and Jon Steinberg.

‘The Rookie’ Season 3 is set to premiere Sunday, January 3rd 2020 at 10/9c on ABC in the USA. We don’t yet know when it’ll appear on Sky Witness, although we suspect it will likely be March/April-ish before it airs here (as with all shows right now, it’s hard to predict when things will land due to the pandemic.) We’ll let you know when we have a confirmed UK air date.
